OLD UNCLE CHRIS MILLER

Old Uncle Chris always worked around the livery stable. He was old when he came here. He was an old stage driver. He was excellent in taking care of horses. He used to work for Roy Santy at the Black Iron Livery Stable. He had a younger brother. His children, besides Lucien and the boy who went to the Philippines, had a younger redheaded boy who died. He was no kin to Double O. Miller. The preacher was a little fellow. His name was Tooley. ( Must have been an Irishman.)

(As a small boy I can remember Uncle Chris as an old man sitting on a chair on the side walk. As we boys passed him he said in a low tone: "God bless you, son." Always, he had whiskers. I heard that once a boy came by and said, "Uncle Chris, would you like a drink of whisky?" And that he said, "Yes, Yes, Yes, son, may the Lord bless you!") Uncle Chris also had a girl or two, for instance, Mattie, who was a feminist and harsh speaker for the cause way back there in school.)

(Written in pencil at the top of the page "Who!? Not Miller.) Later he was charged with stealing some cattle over about Hico and a little fellow named John somebody, a constable, came over here and arrested him. He wanted to go to his mother’s house, out east, to get some clothes or something. While out there his mother jumped on the constable, disarmed him and Jim ran out the back door and left the country for good.

Evant and Ohio Carters were no relation. And there was Old Uncle Jimmie Carter on the Cow House, who he said had lots of girls, and old man Henry, brothers. Old Man Bud Tatum, who came from the same part of Tennessee as Henry, said he killed his wife’s father there while she held the horse. This Henry was considered a pretty good man, had numerous boys including Henry (who died recently and was notorious," Molly, and others. Dave Carter is from this branch.

(Think he was referring to the Dave Carter , late of Evant who went to the Spanish American War, or the army, a boy coached by my father, and later a prominent Mason, whom I knew pretty well.
