My Visit to The Miami Women’s Club

My contact with The Miami Women's Club began with my search for information about Antoinette (Gazzam) Frederick. After receiving copies of documents from the Miami Historical Society, they suggested contacting the Women's Club. I made contact with the president, Ms. Dixie Lemons. She was very helpful in my search. After talking a time or two, Ms. Lemons told me about the Club's upcoming birthday celebration. She asked if I would like to attend. Not only was I ecstatic about being invited, I felt quite honored to attend such a wonderful occassion.

My husband and I arrived at The Women's Club building a little bit early for the luncheon where we took some photos. Unfortunately, the photos we took inside the building have mysteriously been misplaced. The building itself is quite marvelous in it's U-shaped design. The exterior and interior of the building have been maintained to keep the historical look and feel. The Women's Club luncheon was held in the banquet hall on the fourth floor. The high ceilings and decor of this floor is almost breathtaking in it's design to hold true the historical value and importance of such a fine building. There is a marvelous view of Biscayne Bay from the windows of the hall. In the greeting room of the fourth floor there are a couple "loveseats", as we call them now, in the design and patterns of the early 1900's. On the fall wall stands a wood and glass display cabinet. In this cabinet are dolls dressed to the T in the fashion of the time period for each one of the Club's past presidents. Each doll has their hair styled according to how that president wore theirs. The dolls are all labeled with a name of the president they are modeled after. The doll of Antoinette was very strickingly a duplicate of her.

The luncheon was very pleasant. The club was presented with awards from the City of Miami's Mayor, as well as others. I was asked to talk about Antoinette and read her biography that is posted on this site. During the luncheon, a large cake was presented. I was asked to help cut the cake. Ms. Lemons presented me with a plate at the luncheon which is pictured below.

The luncheon was such a memorable event. I am still honored and thrilled that I had been invited to attend.
