Gregg Bonner's Akin Family

James Akin, Sr.

The year of birth of James Akin, Sr. can be fairly approximated from the slightly incongruous ages given by him in certain depositions. He claimed he was 46 in a deposition of DEC 1677, and 45 in a deposition of AUG 1678. Thus his year of birth is not likely to be more than a couple of years different from 1632. His date of death can also be fairly approximated from this Will ABSTRACT:

Will of James Akin, Sr., of Varina Parish, Virginia:
Will Date: 21 APR 1712
Will Probate: 01 FEB 1712/3

To wife Sarah, the Indian woman Rose, and her 2 children and also the plantation for life. At her death this goes to my son James Akin.

All the rest to wife, and she to be executrix.

Codicil: To 4 children James Akin, Mary Womeck, Elizabeth Farlow, and Sarah Nonnoly, each 12 pence.

Wit: Thomas Chamberlayne, Richard Oglesby, Chas. Roberts

Thus James Akin, Sr., and Sarah (maiden name unknown) Akin had (at least) the following children:

1. James Akin, Jr. (see next)
2. Mary Akin, married John Womack
3. Elizabeth Akin, married John Farley
4. Sarah Akin, married Richard Nonnoly

James Akin, Sr. and Sarah were married prior to 01 DEC 1682. This fact is demonstrated by the entry in Weisiger's Henrico County, Virginia Deeds (1677-1705), page 19 (hereafter, Wiesiger):

James Aken, Sr and Sarah his wife assign a parcel of land on east side of Cobbs Slash in Bristol Parish, to Eben Bellange.
Dated:01 DEC 1682
Wit: Richard Lygon, John Faile
Signed: James Aken, Sarah Aken
Recorded: 02 APR 1683
Sarah, the now widow of James Akin, Sr. died not long after her late husband. Her year of death can be fairly approximated by noting this entry by Weisiger in Colonial Wills of Henrico County, Virginia, Part I (1654-1737), page 92:

To daughter Elizabeth Farlow, a feather bed

All the rest to be divided into three parts, one third each to children James, Elizabeth and Sarah

Date: 02 FEB 1713/4
Wit: Thomas Chamberlayne, William Baugh, Chas Roberts
Recorded: 02 AUG 1714

James Akin, Jr.

James Akin, Jr. was born about 1662, and married Anne (maiden name unknown). The fact that James Akin, Jr. married a woman named Anne is seen from Wiesiger, page 43:

Anne, wife of James Eakins, Jr., relinquished her dower right in land sold by her husband and James Eakins, Sr 01 DEC 1686, to Bartholomew Roberts. Hen Randolph, Cl. Cur.

Thomas Akin and Elizabeth Goode

Thomas Akin was born about 1698 in Virginia, and died SEP 1794 in Chesterfield County, Virginia. He married Elizabeth Goode who was born in Virginia and died about 1794 in Chesterfield County, Virginia. They married about 1717 in Henrico County (later Chesterfield County), Virginia. Their children are:

3. Margaret Akin, born about 1734.
4. Sarah Ann Akin, born about 1739.
5. Joseph Akin, born about 1748.
6. Arthur Akin, born about 1759, married (first) Elizabeth R. Pleasants, daughter of William Pleasants and Elizabeth (Folkes) Pleasants, and married (second) Mary "Polly" Lockett, daughter of Francis Lockett and Mary "Polly" (Cheatham) Lockett.
7. Sally Akin, born about 1761.
8. Mary Akin, born about 1763.

Sarah Ann Akin and Nicholas Formby

Sarah Ann Akin was born about 1739 in Dale Parish, Chesterfield County, Virginia, and died about 1775 in Virginia. She married 06 JAN 1758 in Dale Parish, Chesterfield County, Virginia to Nicholas Formby Jr., son of Nicholas Formby, Sr. My direct line of AKIN ended with the death of Sarah Ann (Akin) Formby in about 1775.
