Gregg Bonner's Barrett Family

First Generation

Thomas H. Barrett (b. circa 1729), of Glasgow, Scotland

My line of BARRETT purports to descend from Thomas H. Barrett, born 1729 in Glasgow, Scotland. I believe it is to be taken that this is the same Thomas Barrett who arrived in Baltimore, Maryland in 1733. He is said to have married the widow of unknown GREEVES. Together they had (at least) three children; Edward Barrett, William Barrett, and Thomas Barrett. I have no further information regarding this generation of BARRETTs, except to say that my line is supposed to be descended from Thomas Barrett, son of Thomas H. Barrett. I can vouch for no part of the above material on this first generation.

Second Generation

Thomas Barrett, of Ohio County, Kentucky

Thomas Barrett was born 13 JAN 1768 in Baltimore, Maryland, and died 21 MAR 1819 in Ohio County, Kentucky, and was buried on the Sam Davidson farm in Ohio County, Kentucky. He is said to have married Mary Elizabeth Honaker about 1790. I am not sure where any of this information come from, either. However, I do have a transcription of the WILL of a Thomas Barrett, written 16 JAN 1819, and proved 10 MAY 1819, which I will presume to be the same person. You can find this transcription in my WILLS section.

From the WILL, you can see that he names his wife "Elizabeth". He also names the following children:

Richard W. Barrett
Sally Pate
Joshua P. Barrett
William Barrett
Ignatius Barrett
Mathilda Barrett
Thomas Jefferson Barrett
James B. Barrett

In addition to these, I have that Thomas Barrett and Mary Elizabeth (Honaker) Barrett also had a child named Ara Barrett.

Richard W. Barrett is Richard Wesley Barrett, born 23 JUL 1791 in Maryland, died after 16 JAN 1819.

Sally Pate is Sally (Barrett) Pate, born 1793 in Maryland. Sally clearly married unknown Pate before 16 JAN 1819, and died after 16 JAN 1819.

Joshua P. Barrett was born about 1798, in Kentucky. He must have died after 16 JAN 1819.

William Barrett is sometimes called William B. Barrett, and at other times William S. Barrett born about 1800 in Lexington, Kentucky. I presume William Barrett was born after Joshua P. Barrett only because William Barrett is named after Joshua Barrett in the WILL of Thomas Barrett. Because Joshua Barrett was born in about 1798, that makes William Barrett, by this rationale, born about 1800. William Barrett is said to have owned stores in Hartford and Calhoun, Kentucky, as well as warehouses in New Orleans, Louisiana. He died 04 MAR 1882 in Hancock, Kentucky, and is buried in Alexander Cemetery, Ohio County, Kentucky.

LLOYD I also found some marriages of their children (from both marriages) that we didn't have. John Pickney Barrett married a Mattie BONNER no marriage date but he died in 1894. Lycurgus Barrett married Filura Gentry on 9 Oct. 1890 Louisa married Charles Blacklock on 11 March 1869 William K. Barrett married Frances Wright 27 Dec. 1877 Thomas Washington Barrett married an Amanda Unknown The Source of this information comes from a copy of a page from the KENTUCKY FAMILY RECORDS, VOLUME X, PAGE 58 --- [Gregg Bonner] I show Thomas Jefferson Barrett as born in Lexington, KY (no source).

James B. Barrett was the last child named in the WILL of his father, Thomas Barrett. He was born 06 JUL 1811 in Lexington, Kentucky, died DEC 1821 in Ohio County, Kentucky, and was buried in the Barrett family cemetery in Ohio County, Kentucky.

Ara Barrett is the only supposed child of Thomas Barrett who was not named in his WILL. This makes me wonder if it a bad link. Anyway, all I think I know about Ara Barrett is that he died in Meade County, Kentucky, and was buried at the mouth of Sinking Creek, Meade County, Kentucky. If I were to learn that he died before 16 JAN 1819, then I would be more inclined to believe that he is the son of Thomas.

So from this collection of material, you can see that Thomas Barrett moved from Maryland to Kentucky between 1793 & 1798.

I don't know much about his wife, Mary Elizabeth (Honaker) Barrett, except that she is said to have been born 05 MAY 1768 in Maryland, died 19 MAY 1828 in Ohio County, Kentucky, and buried on the Sam Davidson farm in Ohio County, Kentucky. I wonder if she is somehow descended from Hans Jacob Honegger, which it would seem all Honakers with earlier american roots do. However, my inability to find a link as such makes me wonder whether she may not have been a Honaker by marriage, and other fanciful notions like that.

[Note 2: The census index at ancestry.com has this indexed as page 738. This is in error, as "738" is the filmers numbering. Also it is said to be in Brigg's Mill township. Brigg's Mill is actually the P.O. designation.']

[Note 3: The next census entry is for William K. Barrett, son of Thomas Jefferson Barrett.]

Thomas Jefferson Barrett married Elizabeth Keith, daughter of Bennett J. Keith on 21 JUN 1837 in Ohio County, Kentucky. The marriage license is signed as B. J. Keith, but the 1850 census demonstrates that B. J. Keith and Bennett J. Keith are one and the same. This is consistent with what I have, which is born 09 DEC 1819 in Hardin County, Kentucky, and died 29 DEC 1859 in Ohio County, Kentucky, and buried in the Bradenton Cemetery, Ohio County, Kentucky.

[Anne King was kind enough to send the following to me. I don't know who did the transcription, perhaps it was Anne.]

Many Barretts Engaged In Ohio County Journalism During Past Century

Lyman Gentry Barrett

The Ohio County News, Hartford, KY

May 23, 1958

I have long had a feeling of pride in the fact that a number of the members of the Barrett family have had a part in the journalism of Ohio County. The foregoing article is not an attempt to write a family or journalism history. Its purpose is to simply tell of the journalistic efforts of my clan. The first to have such a role so far as I know was my grandfather, Thomas Jefferson Barrett, who issued a hand-written newspaper at Barrett's Ferry in the years immediately preceding the War Between the States. His news was penned on foolscap paper. It bore the name, "The Slick Knob Scrutinizer." The publication had a subscription rate of $1.50 per year. It was published weekly I think. I do not know the number of its subscribers, or the length of time it was published, but it is my opinion it was for at least two or three years. During at least a portion of the time the Slick Knob Scrutinizer was in existence a similar paper was issued by a man named Pakenham, who lived in the general area. My grandfather was a member of the Church of Christ and was a Whig until the Republican party was formed at which time he espoused the tenets of that party. My first cousin, J. W. Barrett, of Dundee, has the charter of the New Baymus church signed by Thomas Jefferson Barrett and by E. A. Barrett, his first wife, among others, in 1845. Mr. Pakenham was a Catholic and a Democrat. The two men struck at each other editorially on the subjects of politics and religion and jokingly told the meanest of tales on each other in the columns of their newspapers. I have never seen a copy of my grandfather's publication, but my father, Lycurgus Barrett, often talked about it in my youth, as did my uncle, Thomas Washington Barrett, my step uncles Worth Lloyd and John P. Lloyd, my step aunts Mrs. Murray Foreman and Mrs. Elspia Therber. However, I have somewhere in my possession three copies of Mr. Pakenham's newspaper, which I found among my grandfather's relics. In one of these issues The Slick Knob Scrutinizer and its publisher are mentioned. Thomas Jefferson Barrett was born March 21, 1809, about one year after Hartford was chartered. He was the son of Thomas and Mary Elizabeth Honaker Barrett, who had migrated from Maryland to Ohio County some years previously. He married Elizabeth Ann Keith June 21, 1837. To this union were born Elvira, John Pinckney, Lycurgus (my father), Mary Ellen, Lois, and William K Barrett as well as some other children who died in infancy. Thomas Jefferson Barrett was generally known as "Old Major Barrett", because he had held the rank of major in the State Militia. My father often told me about riding horseback behind his father to attend precinct and county muster. Major Barrett owned and operated the ferriage facilities at Barrett's Ferry on Rough River, most of his active life. The present iron bridge was built in 1891. I possess the ferry record book, for the years 1853 to 1875. My grandmother, Elizabeth Ann Keith Barrett, was the daughter of John W. and Mary Keith. [This is in error - John W. Keith was Elizabeth's brother. He married Mary E. Stephens, the daughter of Isaac Stephens. After John W. Keith's death in 1854, Mary then married William Harvey Rice in 1856.] For many years, until the death of Mr. Keith in 1856, the firm Keith and Barrett, my grandfather and his father-in-law, conducted extensive farming and livestock raising operations and a store. I think the mercantile establishment was located near where the Combs family now resides, not far from Shreve. Major Barrett was administrator of his father-in-law's estate. He served for several terms as a justice of the peace in Ohio County, and was also widely consulted about the making of deeds, contracts and other important documents. He died February 19, 1896, when I was four years old. My uncle, John Pinkney Barrett, and his younger brother, Lycurgus Barrett, my father, after they had reached early adulthood came to Hartford and attended school while employed by their uncle, William S. Barrett, who owned stores in Hartford and Calhoun, Kentucky, as well as warehouses in New Orleans. Slaves, hooppoles, livestock and other saleable items were conveyed to the Louisiana metropolis in flatboats. The uncle was a tobacco buyer on a big scale and had a large number of slaves who performed manual labor on his farms. His home still stands on Union Street in Hartford, and is now owned by N. W. Dockery, retired businessman. William S. Barrett was married to Mary E. Blacklock, of Barrett's Ferry, March 26, 1829. They first settled on the farm at Barrett's Ferry, which he later sold to his brother, Thomas Jefferson Barrett, before moving to this city. Although there had been several attempts to publish a paper in Hartford, the first successful try was by John Pinkney Barrett, who at the age of thirty-four founded The Hartford Herald, and was either its publisher, editor or both during the twelve-year period from January 1875 until December 1886, except for brief periods. Most people called the newspaperman Colonel Barrett because of that military title having been conferred on him by a Kentucky Governor. There were few newspapers published in Western Kentucky during that time, and The Herald circulated in several counties other than Ohio. It carried the motto, "" Come the Herald of a Noisy World, the News of all Nations Lumbering at My Back."" This continued to be the slogan until the last issue of The Hartford Herald in 1926/Colonel Barrett gained a wide reputation as an able editorial writer. People who knew him in his journalistic years have told me that he could write an editorial with one hand while taking down news noted with the other. During the Ohio County Fairs of 1877 and 1878 the publisher and his staff issued daily editions of The Hartford Herald which were sold at the Ohio county Fairgrounds, in the eastern portion of the Hartford community. So far as is known this was Ohio County's first and last daily. News for the daily publication was transmitted from the fairgrounds to the newspaper office by means of a telephone line constructed for the purpose, the first ever used in Ohio County. It was then known as a telomacrophone. From 1868 to 1870, John Pinkney Barrett had served as chief deputy sheriff under John A. Taylor and two terms as High Sheriff from 1870 to 1874. Terms were then two years in length and sheriffs could succeed themselves. From 1881 to 1893, Colonel Barrett served as master commissioner under Circuit Judge Lucius P. Little. For a considerable period John Pinkney Barrett was associate editor of a publication sponsored by the Order of Good Templars in Kentucky. In an article by T. E. Richey, editor of the publication, my uncle was referred to as founder of Good Templars in the state and city, and it said tat that time there were six hundred lodges and 20,000 members in the state. John Pinkney Barrett was born May 7, 1841 at Barrett's Ferry, Kentucky, and was married to Mattie J. Bonner, of Calhoun, May 15, 1866. Their only two children, Ania B. Barrett and John Pinkney Barrett, Jr., infants, died in November 1869 and are buried in South Hartford cemetery, as are the parents. One of the most colorful writers The Herald ever had was Mattie Bonner Barrett, wife of the founder of The Hartford Herald, a cultured lady who died at home in Hartford, April 17, 1929. She served for some time as local editor of The Hartford Herald and also did much feature writing. Throughout much of the period when her husband, John Pinkney Barrett, was publisher of the paper, she wrote under the nom de plume, "Nancy Jane Jones", humorous articles, usually from the fictitious community, "Pea Vine Ridge." In addition to the bound volumes of the Hartford Herald, 1875 to 1886, I have Aunt Mattie's scrapbook, which contains a large number of her articles and clippings of items about the Barrett family. During much of the twelve year period when my uncle was associated with The Herald, my father, Lycurgus Barrett, had a part in the work, sometimes as co-publisher, sometimes as local editor, at other times as reporter and printer. After spending twenty-eight years in Hartford and Calhoun, Lycurgus Barrett returned to Barrett's Ferry, and taught one year at New Baymus School, under the superintendency of Frank L. Felix. He did some farming, conducted dancing classes and married Filura Gentry. They conducted a store near the ferry, and when the Illinois Central Railroad system line from Owensboro to Horse Branch was being built, they established a store at Davidson Station. My father, who was Barrett's Ferry postmaster, moved that office to a new location. After the construction of the railroad had been finished, they left the mercantile business and went to live with and take care of my maternal grandmother, Ann Johnson Gentry, nearby. Following her death, my parents purchased some of the shares in the old Thomas Jefferson Barrett farm near the new Barrett's Ferry Bridge. It was there that my sisters, Lucille and Bonner Barrett, and myself were reared. My father was born June 19, 1843 and died in 1915. My mother was born June 16, 1862, and died at my home in Central City April 10, 1927. Lycurgus Barrett, during his residence in Hartford, also served for eight years as deputy sheriff, for sometime as clerk in various stores, and for a long period as partner of Colonel Barrett in the insurance business. He was once offered the state editorship of the Louisville Courier-Journal. My father often talked about his newspaper experiences and [unreadable] become a newspaperman. He was the Herald's Barrett's Ferry correspondent for several years. Following his death, I wrote the local happenings for a considerable period while teaching school, but had my first actual on-the-job experience during a five-week period just previous to entering World War I in early 1918. During that brief period, I was The Herald's local editor. Upon my return home from the service, I purchased stock in The Hartford Herald and served in an editorial and managerial capacity until early 1923. For some time previous to my leaving The Herald, McDowell A Fogle had been associated with me in editing and publishing that newspaper. My sister, Mrs. Bonner Midkiff, now of the New Baymus community, worked at the Herald office for several months in 1922. In 1926 W. S. Tinsley, who had for some time been editor of the Hartford Republican, established in 1888, and Mr. Fogle, who was still editor of The Herald, after consulting with their stockholders, evolved and carried into execution a plan for consolidating the two papers. The new publication was named The Oho County News. This publication continues as a successful operation under the management and principal ownership of Percy H. Landrum. I have been associated with The Ohio County News at two different periods, during the late 1920's and early 1930's, as editor and manager, and again as editor during the years 1952 through 1954. During my thirty-five-year journalistic career, I have also served as advertising manager for the thrice-a-week Raleigh Register, now a daily, Beckley, West Virginia; editor and publisher of The Central City Argus, Central City, KY; as the editor and publisher of the Blue Grass Clipper, Midway, Ky.; as editor of The Daily Suffolk News-Herald, Suffolk, Virginia; as editor of the Marion County Democrat, Salem, Illinois; as associate editor and feature writer of The Hickory Daily Record, Hickory, North Carolina; and as editor of the twice-a-week Catawba News-Enterprise, Newton, North Carolina. I have won various top press association awards in three states. I was married to Ruth Braden Culley, a schoolteacher, June 22, 1918. She died in 1935. Five children survive this union. In 1940 I was married to [unreadable?] Farrigan, a Public Health Nurse. My children, Lynn Culley Barrett, Eldon Gentry Barrett, Marion Hugh Barrett, Mary Lou Barrett and Jo-Nell Barrett have worked in various capacities at The Ohio County News office and plant. Lynn Culley is the only one of my children who has made journalism and printing a career. He pursued courses in journalism at the University of Kentucky, and studied linotyping at an Iowa school. He was an associate editor and columnist on the Blue Grass Clipper, worked with me on The Marion County Democrat, and following completion of his fifty combat missions as a fighter pilot in World War II, was given thorough training in public relations and served as public relations officer at various Air Force bases in this country. At present Lynn is foreman of a newspaper and commercial printing plant in Cranford, New Jersey. Eldo was associated with Lynn and I on The Blue Grass Clipper for a time and later worked at a printing plant in Suffolk, Virginia. Marion Hugh was for a few months employed at The Marion Country [County?] Democrat. Mary Lou, who had worked at the office of the Marion County Democrat, later married the editor of The Salem Republican, E. M. Jones. Jo-Nell, during one summer, was proofreader for The Suffolk News-Herald. Her husband, Paul J. McCullough, is a minister-teacher-salesman. My mother-in-law, Mrs. Mollie Culley, was for several years principal owner of The Ohio County News and president of Hartford Printing Company, Inc., the publishing concern. For some time her son, J. Robert Culley, served as linotype operator, foreman or general manager of The Ohio County News.

[From Linda Mans]

James is listed in Stormont's History of Gibson County. James was listed as a church trustee.

From the Princeton-Clarion Newspaper dated Thursday 9 September 1909:

James M. Gentry, a well known citizen of Center township, died last night at his home one and one-half miles east of Francisco from the effects of paralysis. Five years ago, he suffered from a paralytic stroke, which made him an invalid. Recently he had been some better, but two weeks ago a second stroke came and has caused his death.

He was 77 years of age and had been a resident of the vicinity of Francisco about 45 years. He was highly esteemed as a man and citizen. A wife and three children survive, Will Gentry of Francisco, Mrs. John Rheuff of near Oakland City and a daughter in Missouri. The funeral will be held at Forsyth church Friday morning at 10:00 and internment will be in the Forsyth Cemetery.

Must have moved from Ohio County, KY to Gibson County, IN by 22 Mar 1873, and sometime after the birth of Mary Bell.

[This is the kind of thing which makes me thing that John Pinckney Barrett's wife was Martha Bonner, not Mattie (Matilda) Bonner. It seems to me that this Census record makes Matilda Barrett the sister-in-law of John P. Barrett. Perhaps there is some confusion about the name "Mattie". Maybe Martha was called "Mattie" and people who came along later knew she was a Bonner, and figured "Mattie" referred to Matilda. In any case, it is very rare for the husband-wife pair in a Census record to be split by another person's entry. This coupled with the fact that the Kentucky Death Index shows she died at 90, making her birth more like 1839. So she should have been about 31 in the 1870 Census. This age is more closely approximated by Martha than Mathilda.]

Kentucky Death Index shows her as dying at age 90.
