Nathan Formby and Tabitha (Echols) Formby

Mary "Polly" Formby (born 18 Jul 1784, died 04 Aug 1865) While the picture is not great, I think that you can see that the date of birth given is 1786, not the 1784 that is widely given. I think the tombstone is likely in error, as I believe the 1784 date was supplied by Nathan Formby in his Revolutionary War pension application. Notice also that an 18 Jul 1786 birth would be impossible if it is true that Mary's brother (Fountain) was born 23 Sep 1786. Obviously, siblings cannot be born only a couple of months apart.

Fountain Formby (born 23 Sep 1786) Some people will claim that Fountain Formby never married, but according to Milner Echols, he married a "Miss Harvie". If true, that would mean that he lived to marrying age, so let's call that 20 years old, and say he died Aft. 1806.

Elizabeth Formby (born 12 Nov 1792, died Aft. 1850) I think there is a lot of confusion about Elizabeth. Some show her with a 26 Nov 1804 marriage to William H. Moore. This is in error. The 26 Nov 1804 marriage of Elizabeth Formby actually refers to the marriage of an Elizabeth Formby to Arthur Slayton (Slayden, Slaydon, etc.). Since this Elizabeth Formby (daughter of Nathan) would have been only 12 years old, it was not her. I suspect the Elizabeth Formby who married Arthur Slaydon was Nathan Formby's sister.

Another marriage shown by many for this Elizabeth Formby is to Joel Crawford, 16 Nov 1815, Morgan County, Georgia. The marriage record there shows one Ailey G. Formby married to Joel Crawford, and it is held that Ailey and Elizabeth are the same person.

Joel Crawford is enumerated in the 1850 census (Shelby County, Alabama, Page 203A, HH# 405/409, lines 11-14) with a woman who by all appearances is his wife, named Abby. If Ailey and Abby and Elizabeth are all the same person, then this Elizabeth died Aft. 1850, as she was enumerated in that census. There is some question about the possibility that Abby was a second wife of Joel (with Ailey/Elizabeth being the first). There is also the possibility that "Ailey G." really should be "Abbey Gail". It should be noted that it is possible that her name was Elizabeth Abigail Formby. I believe her father's Revolutionary War pension application gives her name as "Betssy" [sic].

Many online databases give her death as 02 DEC 1835. Obviously, this cannot be the case, if she is the same person as in the above census record. I believe the date of death should read "AFT. 02 DEC 1835". Notice that Fountain Formby (see above) is also given by some online databases as dying "Bef. 02 DEC 1835" (i.e., the same date), so these appear not to be dates of death, but rather inferencial dates relative to some document, which presumably distinguishes which of Nathan's children are still living. It is possible that it is related to the death of Frances W. Formby (see below), who died Oct 1835.
