the Great-Granddaughter of John Bonner and Sarah Hicks Bonner.)
|
Robert
Hicks married Miss Irby (should be Irwin) of Virginia. One of their daughters married a Reeves,
another, Sarah, was left in her care.
She treated her as a menial.
John Bonner of English descent fell in love with her. He stole her from her sister. In her flight
she left her wardrobe. He purchased her
trousseau for her and they were married at church. Robert Hicks, a third child, inherited the landed estate. He founded the town of Hicksford, in Sussex
County, VA. Sarah,
the wife of John Bonner, was a woman of unusual strength and decision of
character. She was noted for her strong
will and independent spirit. Her
husband at one time went to Petersburg and had the necessary writings drawn up
to free his many negroes. When he
reached home that night, and told his wife of it, she was indignant, and told him
that she did not consider it safe to remain on the place with a set of free
negroes so she got up and started to walk to her son Robert's home but being at
that time old and feeble, and it being in the night, she was unable to reach
the house although she had crawled part of the way. She called repeatedly to her son to come to her aid. He and his wife were seated around the
fireside. He heard her cry and said,
"wife, that is my Mother's voice I hear, I must go to her". Sarah belonged to the English Church. She,
in company with her son Robert, started to go to church. She was riding a wild, untamed, colt, that
no woman had ever attempted to ride before.
Suddenly she let the bridle reins fall on the colts neck, raising her
hands aloft and clasping them together exclaimed; "It is so"!
"What is so?" exclaimed Robert. "That we must have a change of
heart before we can be saved" she replied. After
the death of her husband, she went to live with Robert. She was then very old. One day she was sitting before the fire
engaged in knitting. She said to her
son; "Tomorrow I will be sitting in this same seat with my knitting in my
hand and just as the clock strikes ten, my soul will have taken flight". Robert remained about the house the next day
and as the clock struck ten, she breathed her last. She had twelve or fourteen children by John Bonner. I here-with furnish the names of twelve, and
the names of those they married, and the names and number of their children as

who was beautiful and very amiable.
They wrote to Charles extolling her many charms. Charles visited them. John was a Methodist preacher. Sunday they went to church. Charles attention was soon attracted by one
of the prettiest girls he had ever seen. As soon as they were at home, he
exclaimed, "I saw my future wife today." He was asked to describe her and when he did so they exclaimed,
"Why it is Rhoda Ham, we know she would just suit you." After Charles
married Rhoda their happiness was complete, but alas, after the birth of her
first child, she had puerperal fever and her mind was never restored. Charles' devotion never wavered. He slept with each of their little babes in
his arms at night and watched over them with a Mother's devotion while his meek
