Pension Application Of Richard Jones, Nat’l Archives Series M804, Roll __, Application #W26799

                            Declaration

Sumner County, Tennessee, September term of Circuit Court for said county}

On this 20th day of September, 1832, personally appeared in open court

before the Honorable Thomas Stewart, judge, etc, now sitting, Richard Jones, a

resident of Sumner County and state of Tennessee, aged 66 the 8th day of June,

1832, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the

following declaration…:

He entered the service of the United States under Captain Besheres

[Brashears] in the state of North Carolina in the year 1780 where he was at

that time residing, and marched to the state of South Carolina, where they had

an engagement with the Tories and a parcel of British officers at a place

called Colson’s [Mill] on the Peedee River. General Davidson was the commanding

officer, and during the engagement he received a wound which caused him to

remain at that place for some length of time.

From this place he was marched through different ____ [?portions] of

South Carolina and went to the ___ [?town] of Cheraws which had been consumed

by fire some short time before the army reached; and pursued the enemy to

Camden. The army was now under the command of General Gates. Applicant was not

in the battle that was fought at Camden, having been left behind with the sick.

During this service applicant believes that he was some part of the time under

the command of General Sumter.

From this place, applicant returned home, when he received orders to

march to New Providence on a tour of duty of two months and 14 days under the

command of Captain Brashears and General Davidson as the commanding officer.

After this tour of duty expired, applicant returned home and remained

for some time when he volunteered under Colonel James Martin who raised a

company of horsemen to suppress the Tories and British foraging parties in the

county of Guilford. James Martin, the officer under whom he first volunteered,

was wounded at a place called Alamance in a skirmish with the British, when his

brother Samuel Martin took the command of the company. The applicant served in

all a time around nine months.

After his tour ended at New Providence, he was discharged by General

Davidson, which he has lost or mislaid. This was the only discharge that this

applicant received. He states that he was born in the state of North Carolina,

he thinks in the county of Guilford. He has a record of his age in his Bible at

home. At the time he entered the service he was living in the county of

Guilford in the state of North Carolina, where he continued to reside until he

removed to the county of ?same? in the state of Tennessee where he has been

living for about 45 years…etc. Richard Jones, his mark

State of Tennessee, Sumner County}

On this, the 25th of November, 1839, personally appeared before me,

Robert Joyner, one of the justices of the peace in and for said county and

state of Tennessee, Mary Jones, a resident of said county aged 71 years, who

being first duly sworn according to law, doth on her oath make the following

declaration…:

That she is the widow of Richard Jones who was a pensioner of the

United States and who drew his pension in Nashville, state of Tennessee for

services rendered during the War of the Revolution. She further declares that

she was married to the said Richard Jones on the 29th day of December, 1785.

That her husband, the aforesaid Richard Jones died on the 14th day of August

1837. That she was not married to him prior to his leaving the service, but the

marriage took place previous to the first day of January, 1794, to wit, at the

time above stated. Mary Jones, her mark.

Sworn to and subscribed before me, on the day and year first written above,

Robert Joyner, Justice of the peace, Sumner County

[Note from Gregg Bonner: The below will refer to Mrs. Jennie Roe Wallace as "a descendant". I have investigated this, and believe that Jennie Roe Wallace was NOT a descendant. What I believe is the case is that Jennie was trying to get in the DAR on the service of her ancestor, who was a different Jones man.]

From a typewritten letter to a descendant, Mrs. Jennie Roe Wallace who lived in

Pinckneyville, Ill, dated Oct. 27, 1926, it was stated that Mary Jones was the

sister of a James Buchanan, who in 1839 was living in Davidson County,

Tennessee, aged about 77 years. In 1843, Mary Jones had moved to White County,

Illinois. She died in April or May, 1845.

Notes for Mary * Buchanan:

I am keeping this here for now. When I thought that Richard Jones had been married twice, it made sense to think this was Mary Buchanan (Mary, 58f). But since Richard now appears to have married only once, Mary Buchanan would have to be much older (she would be more like 82 if she made the 1850 census). So I am now guessing this Mary is actually L.C.

1900 Census, WHERE IS LEROY?

In the marriage records of Sumner County, TN, there is a marriage: Abisha Williams to Peggy Brigance, 13 MAR 1816.

So perhaps this Abisha Williams and Peggy Brigance are the parents of Leroy Thomas Williams, Sr., although that marriage would have taken place some 19 days AFTER the birth of Leroy Thomas Williams, Sr.

From Goodspeed:

L. E. JONES is a native of Tennessee. and was born in the year 1816.  His parents were North Carolinians by birth, and his maternal grandfather served his country faithfully in the Revolutionary war.  The subject of our sketch was reared on a farm by one of his uncles, Isaiah Hammond, and lived with him until after attaining his twenty-first birthday, and then began the battle of life for himself, and has been a tiller of the soil up to the present time.  In January, 1840, he united his fortunes with Miss Nancy Bryant, of Bedford County, and their union resulted in the birth of twelve children, seven of whom are now living.  Our subject has been quite prosperous in his farming enterprises, and is now living in sight of the first house that was ever built in Bedford County.  He received limited educational advantages, but has always manifested a willingness to aid in any and all enterprises pertaining to the advancement of educational interests.  His political views are Democratic, and he gives his support to that party. He has always been scrupulously honest in all his business transactions, and is considered one of Bedford County's most substantial citizens.

     36.  Leroy Thomas "Tom" *3 Williams (Mahalee S.2 Jones, Richard *1) was born 13 May 1848 in <Bedford County>, Tennessee113, and died 05 Sep 1920 in <Bedford County, Tennessee>113.  He married (1) Mary Caroline * Lentz 21 Dec 1872 in Bedford County, Tennessee114, daughter of Samuel Lentz and Louisa Springer.  She was born 23 Jan 1854115, and died 10 May 1878115.  He married (2) Kitty W. Bruster 12 Dec 1878 in Bedford County, Tennessee, daughter of Hugh Bruster and Nancy Lentz.  She was born 02 Nov 1861 in Tennessee116, and died 02 May 1935 in <Bedford County, Tennessee>116.  He married (3) Annie unknown ABT. 1907 in PROB. TN.  She was born ABT. 1867 in TN.

Notes for Leroy Thomas "Tom" * Williams:

Leroy Thomas "Tom" Williams, Jr. was married three times. His first two wives were 1st cousins (i.e., Mary Caroline Lentz and Kitty Bruster were cousins because they were both grand-daughters of Benjamin F. Lentz).

Sometimes Thomas Williams is confused with Thomas E. Williams of Bedford County, TN of about the same era. This confusion arises by virtue of the death certificate of his son, William Williams,  whereupon it is stated that his father was Thomas E. Williams. Whether this is an error of ignorance or communication, I know not. In any case, THIS Thomas Williams is the one buried next to his brother Zachary and their parents with a tombstone reading "Thomas Lee Williams". From the census records, it can be seen (particularly in the 1860 census, where he is called "L. T., Jr.") that he is more properly called Leroy Thomas Williams, Jr., and that he was by the name "Tom", and probably also sometimes "Thomas". I believe he was called by his middle name to distinguish him from his father, Leroy Thomas Williams, Sr., who was called by "Lee", as in, short for "Leroy". I believe it was this name truncation ("Leroy" to "Lee") which led to Leroy Thomas Williams, Jr. being buried as "Thomas Lee Williams".

I got this e-mail from Cheryl Zelek [[email protected]] following a post I made to [email protected]:

This is what I have on your Samuel Lentz- he is the son of Benjamin Franklin

Lentz & Penelope Bussey, grandson of Benjamin Fite and Rosanna Fite,

great-grandson of John Lentz and Catherine Culp and Johann Pieter Veit/Peter

Fite and Margehet Eve --???--.  I descend from both John Lentz/Catherine Culp

lines as well as the Johann Pieter Veit/Peter Fite/Margehet Eve ??? line.  My

4th great grandfather was a brother to Rosanna Fite and I also descend from

Benjamin and Rosanna's son, George Lentz.

Documentation for Lentz information:

letter dated 1 Dec 1997, received 5 Dec 1997,  from Thomas Kendal (Kenny) Jones,

Benjamine Lentz/Rosanna fite dates from family bible.   Benjamin Lentz-Penelope

Bussy Bible in possession of a Mrs. Ernest Reed.

I would love to bring this portion of the line to the present?  Would you be

willing to exchange information?  I can take you backwards.  Extensive Fite

information and a lot of Lentz information.  Check out the trees at

Catherine Culp tree up there as well as the Johann Pieter Veit tree (first five

generations only).

Process of elimination. His mom said in the 1900 census she had 8 children and 6 yet lived. All other children known to be living except Samuel. There is some possibility that "Joe" and Richard are the same person. If that is the case, one more child has yet to be identified.

I have merged info from the Neeley database. I presume that these are the same people. I have no evidence other than that below.

There was a Haley Williams (21 OCT 1877-26 NOV 1906), wife of H. S. Neeley (probably Henry Spencer Neeley) buried in Mt. Lebanon Cemetery, Bedford County, Tennessee.

H. Spencer Neeley (25 JAN 1872-15 OCT 1962) is buried next to Haley Williams, and also to what is probably his second wife, Alice L. (maiden name unknown) (03 APR 1882-07 AUG 1969).

In the mill with his father when he was a young man. One would work in the day and one at night. Closed around 1890.

Is he the same Henry S. Neely who is in the 1930 census with wife Jessie A., daughter Clara E., and son Spencer M. Neely?
