Gregg Bonner's MOORE Family
William H. MOORE & Israel MOORE

William H. Moore was born 16 APR 1776, and died 15 AUG 1855. These dates are taken from his tombstone [click to see a digital image of his tombstone]. He married 23 SEP 1805, in Oglethorpe County, Georgia to Mary "Polly" Ann (Formby) Day, the widow of William Day. According to her tombstone, she was born 18 JUL 1786, and died 04 AUG 1865 [click to see a digital image of her tombstone]. Both of these graves are in Moore-Tison Cemetery. Together, William H. Moore and Mary "Polly" (Formby) Day Moore had the following children:

1. Matilda Moore (m. Larkin NOEL)
2. Sarah "Sally" Moore (m. James COTTLE)
3. Tabitha Moore (m. Henry H. DAVIS)
4. Susan Moore (m. Richard DAVIS)
5. Elizabeth Moore (m. Tilman REYNOLDS)
6. William A. Moore (m. Adaline FERGUSON)
7. Israel Moore (m. Caroline WILLIAMS)
8. Jane E. Moore (m. Seaborn BROWN)
9. Martha C. Moore (m. William Jefferson "Jeff" WILLIAMS)
10. Mary Law Moore (m. William JOHNSON)
11. Lucinda Moore (m. Jonathan TYSON)

William H. Moore left a will in Troup County, Georgia (dated 14 AUG 1854 - proved 03 SEP 1855). I have provided a transcription of said will, which you can see by clicking here.
William H. Moore was only enumerated in one census which gave the names of every member of the household.

1850 Census, Troup County, Georgia District 804, Page 81A, HH#325/53:
MOORE, William H. 74m farmer 2500 Virginia
MOORE, Mary 60f Virginia
MOORE, Lucinda 20f Georgia
MOORE, Mary 16f Georgia

William H. Moore also appears in the 1840 census of Troup County, Georgia:
MOORE, William H. 2-6-7-4

The parents of William H. Moore are not known. However, there is strong circumstantial evidence that one Israel MOORE is his brother. Israel MOORE was born about 1782 in Virginia, and died about 1862 in Madison County, Alabama. He married Sarah "Sally" Ann Formby (sister to Mary "Polly" Ann (Formby) Day Moore, wife of William H. Moore) 02 DEC 1807 in Oglethorpe County, Georgia. Note that William H. Moore also had a son named Israel Moore. Both Israel MOOREs can be found in the 1840 census of Troup County, Georgia. In sum, I have found the elder Israel Moore in these census records:

Census: 1830 Walton County, Georgia, Page 140
Census: 1840 Troup County, Georgia, District 804, Page 337
Census: 1850 Carroll County, Georgia, Page 51, HH#682
Census: 1860 Carroll County, Georgia, Bowden, Page 580, HH#55/56
This Israel Moore and his wife, Sarah "Sallie" Ann (Formby) Moore had the following children:

1. Augustus R. Moore (m. Dicey Ann STAPLES), born about 1812
2. Martha Tabitha Moore (m. Simeon L. Ezell)
3. Sarah Jane Moore (m. James Mark Smith), born 20 SEP 1832, died 25 AUG 1871
4. William "Billy" Moore

William H. Moore also owned land practically adjacent to Israel Moore. I cannot tell whether this Israel Moore is the brother or son of William H. Moore, however. In Forrest Clark Johnson's "People of Ante-bellum Troup County, Georgia", page 31, he listed a William H. Moon as the winner of (1827 Georgia Land Lottery) Land Lot #28 in the 16th district. This author provides the parenthetical comment "this could be Moore". The person listed is from the county of Elbert.

In any case, William H. Moore ended up having involvement with land in the 5th district of Troup County, at least for Land Lot #253 and Land Lot #254. The 5th district is separated from the 16th district by the Chattahoochie River, and Israel Moore owned the land just on the other side of the river. Israel Moore's land was Land Lot #14 and Land Lot #15. Tracing the land on the other side of the Chattahoochie River from Israel Moore's land in the 16th district you will find the following land lots in the 5th district:

Land Lot #301: A fractional lot purchased by Hardy JONES, of Troup County, Georgia. This is really quite the coincidence, since this Hardy Jones is also my ancestor. William H. Moore's great grandson (my great grandfather) married Hardy Jones' great great granddaughter (my great grandmother) some 70 years after these lands were assigned. I believe that there are more familial connections between the MOORE and JONES families (see below).

Land Lot #259: Only the far northwest corner of this land lot approaches the Chattahoochie River. It was originally won by Charles H. Hardy of Jackson County in the 1827 Land Lottery. From thence it passed to Hardy Howard (see Deed Book "A", page 294), then to Hardy Jones (see Deed Book "B", 382), then to Hardy Jones, Jr. (see deed book "B", page 484), then to Samuel Akers, who seemed to have bought a lot of land in the surrounding area. I wonder if all these instances of the name "Hardy" are coincidental. In any case, Land Lot #301 is directly west of Land Lot #259. Land Lot #258: This fractional lot was purchased by Richard M. Ward of Upson County in the 1827 Land Lottery. It appears to have been sold to Joseph POST (probably Joseph Martin Post, died 15 JUN 1847) in 1834 (142 acres).

Land Lot #257: This fractional lot (and Land Lot #255) was puchased by Dye & Stodgill, of Troup County, Georgia.

Just to the east of Land Lot #259 is Land Lot #253, one of the lots owned by William H. Moore. Thus only one land lot separated the land of William H. Moore from the land of Israel Moore. Since these lots were (at maximum) 202.5 acres, the maximum distance between William H. Moore's Land Lot #253 (5th District) and Israel Moore's Land Lot #15 (16th District) is about one half of a mile. The other land lot that William H. Moore bought was Land Lot #254 in the 5th District, just north of Land Lot #253. This land would have been even closer to Israel Moore's land (Land Lot #14, 16th District); only Richard M. Ward's fractional lot and the Chattahoochie River would separate them. Notice also that these lands in the 16th District would also be very close to William H. Moore's original land lot awarded in the 1827 Georgia Land Lottery (i.e., Land Lot #28).

But there is something perhaps more interesting about Land Lot #253 and Land Lot #254 than their proximity to the land of Israel Moore. Land Lot #253 was won in the 1827 Georgia Land Lottery by a WYATT (given as Lamina Wyatt by Johnson - but I think she was Laurana WYATT). She sells Land Lot #253 to William H. Moore in 1839 (witnessed by P. H. Greene; this deed also mentions Wyatt's or Post's mill). I believe there are familial connections between the MOORE and WYATT families (see below). A couple of years later (1841), P. H. Greene sells (quits claim to) the south half of Land Lot #253 in payment of "Regard & Affection" from William H. Moore. The prior year (1840) Taliaferro MOORE (of Stewart County) sold Land Lot #253 to Philip H. Greene for $500. The indication given is "The property is sold right of Eliza WYATT, now wife of Taliaferro". The deed also names "W. Moore". I think this directly links the MOORE family to the WYATT family of Laurana WYATT. I think I have seen Taliaferro Moore as Talfair MOORE, Toliver MOORE, and other variant spellings. I understand this "P. H. Green" to be Philip Hunter Greene, the 'mechanical genius' who built some homes and things in the vicinity of LaGrange, Georgia. Then William H. Moore appears to buy back the land (1849) that he had previously quit claim on (100 acres from Gideon Leverett). Somewhere in between, it looks like Philip H. Green sold that land back to Lourana Wyatt. So there must be some deeds that I have not discovered yet. Another curious thing about the deeds is one from Lourana WYATT to Thomas M. Wyatt, trustee for Robert and Emily Wyatt. This deed has the description "The property is sold in a promisory note made by P. H. Greene due", and is witnessed by Riley G. Ingraham. I think this deed shows maybe three things. It shows a relationship between Laurana WYATT and Thomas Ballard Wyatt; it shows a relationship between Moore and Wyatt, possibly through Philip Hunter Greene; it shows more evidence of relationship between the MOORE and JONES families (see more on that, below).

Hints at Ancestry

I really don't have any idea who might be the parents of William H. Moore and Israel Moore, but I think I can find other members of the MOORE family. As mentioned above, William H. Moore had land dealings with Laurana WYATT of Newton County. So in looking for the WYATT family of Newton County, I note the will abstract of Thomas Ballard WYATT. His will was written 23 OCT 1830 and was probated 02 JAN 1832. In his will, Thomas Ballard Wyatt mentions (daughter) Jemima Mize, (daughter) Nancy Moore, (daughter) Mary Kelly, (daughter) Susannah Burges, Martha Moore, (daughter) Thurza Moore, (daughter) Lucy Gay, (daughter) Sarah Wyatt, (grandaughter) Lurancy Wyatt, (wife) Susannah Wyatt, and (sons) Joseph M. Wyatt and Thomas M. Wyatt.

So it would seem from the will alone that at least 2 of Thomas Ballard WYATT's daughters (Nancy and Thurza) married MOORE men. Nancy WYATT evidently married Isaac MOORE (05 OCT 1807, Greene County, Georgia), and Thurza WYATT (sometimes aka "Thirza Wyatt", or even "Theresa Wyatt") evidently married Joshua MOORE (05 AUG 1824, Jasper County, Georgia). Further, it seems that Sarah WYATT married a Joshua MOORE after her father had passed away (05 OCT 1834, Newton County, Georgia). There are also some who say that the Martha Moore mentioned in the will of Thomas Ballard Wyatt is his daughter, but I think this is not the case for a variety of reasons; but principally, it should be noted that for all his other daughters, he stated explicitly "my daughter", but did not do so for Martha. I suspect that Martha is some other relation - perhaps a sister, in spite of the fact that she was given the same bequest as the daughters. I will keep it this way unless/until someone can produce a marriage for her.

Do William H. Moore and Israel Moore share ancestry with husbands of these WYATT girls' husbands?:

1. Joshua Moore (husband of Thirza WYATT, Sarah WYATT, and Mary FINLEY), born Abt. 1789, in Delaware, son of Isaac Moore (b. Abt. 1755 in Kent County, Delaware) and Frankey (--?--) MOORE. Isaac MOORE died about 1840 in Henry County, Georgia. This Isaac MOORE had a son William, but I don't see a son Israel for him. However, he did have sons with Biblical names, like Isaac, Jacob, Elijah, etc. So maybe Israel is missing, or perhaps it is a middle name. Just to point out one other thing, Joshua MOORE was married in Jasper County, Georgia. There was a Joseph MOORE from Jasper County who won Land Lot #285 in the 5th District of Troup County in the 1827 Land Lottery. This land is some distance from the other land lots I have described (above) - it is almost in the very southwestern corner of the county. This Joseph MOORE was a Veteran of the Revolution.

2. Isaac Moore (husband of Nancy WYATT), born Abt. 1786, in Kent County, Delaware, son of Isaac Moore and Frankey; brother to Joshua Moore (above). Isaac died after 1850, in Fayette, Georgia.

Here is an interesting piece:

RANDOLPH COUNTY, ALABAMA, SIXTY-TWO YEARS AGO THE RED MANS HOME, THE WHITE MANS EDEN by J.M.K. Guinn (1894-1896) --- Davis E. Grisham was 38 years of age, and a "Coon" Whig. He lived on the hill north of Wedowee and owned the Che-wasti-haadgo N 1-2, S 3, 20, Randolph 11 reserved under Creek Treaty of 1832. He sold out to J. W. Guinn in 1843 and moved to Roanoke beat near his old home, located in 1835 on Grave's creek, probably the Bob Birdsong place. He was elected in 1844. He made a good Commissioner and was highly respected. Eventually, he went west. Sygmon Moore was 48 years of age and lived in Lovvorn's beat. When I first got acquainted with him I thought he and Seymore, Bazemore, Latimore, McLemore, Elmore, Fillmore, Gilmore, and Guy Moore, Israel Moore and Lypson Moore were all brothers. It happened however, that Guy Moore got in court about a wild hog, and during the trial, I leaned which was which.
From the positioning of the word "and", one could conclude that Sygmon, Seymore, Bazemore, Latimore, McLemore, Elmore, Fillmore, and Gilmore were all brothers, and that Guy, Israel, and Lypson were brothers.
