John S. Newton |
Born: 24 Jun 1839, South Carolina.
Married: Melissa Adeline Eaves, 29 Nov 1860, Lauderdale/Lawrence? County, Mississippi.
Died: 18 Jun 1908, Madison County, Texas.
Note 1: William Henry (my grandfather and John�s son) always insisted that his father John was born in Meridian, Mississippi. Other records I�ve come across confirm that he was born in SC. It may be that his family moved to MS while John was quite young hence the mistaken belief that he originated from there.
Note 2: Buried in Bozeman Cemetery, Madison County, Texas, photos of John�s tombstone indicate that the surname etched on it is misspelled as �Neuton� rather than correctly as �Newton�.
Note 3: John served as a Sergeant in Company C of the 41st Mississippi Infantry from January 1862 to June 1864. He was wounded and lost his arm in battle.
Note 4: Photocopies of a Confederate Pension Application, dated September 30, 1899, indicates he applied for pension because of his disability but was denied.
Note 5: Melissa�s name sometimes appears as �Malissa�.
