SCARBOROUGHS IN RUSSELL CO., ALABAMA

Extracted from CS Research Vol. 10, p. 104-155, January 2005

Supplemented by some Federal Census info (from Ancestry.com Images Online)

This page contains the ÒgristÓ of about 140 pages of notes gleaned from official public records and other sources during a research trip in January 2005 to Russell and Barbour Counties in Alabama.  The present summary only addresses the Russell County data, with just brief reference to related Barbour County information.  A separate research summary is available for Barbour County.  (There is realtively little overlap in the array of ScarboroughÕs in the two counties.)  I visited the Russell County Courhouse and spent time in the Phenix City-Russell County Public Library looking through their genealogy materials.  The present summary should be considered simply a guide to the data in my research notebook.  Here I provide key dates, names, and references but in many cases my notes contain more detail such as complete descriptions of tracts of lands, abstracts of petitions and wills, etc.  My Genealogy Research Volume 10 page numbers are listed in parentheses after each event.  Citations of original sources and further details are available upon request.  I intersperse Federal Census data here to add some context but this is not meant to be an exhaustive listing of that data.

Individual ScarboroughÕs are alphabetized by given name.  Records for spouses of ScarboroughÕs are combined with the Scarborough individual.  I gleaned data on the surnames ÒScarboroughÓ, ÒScarbroughÓ, and all obvious variations.  Since I have no known African-American heritage in my Scarborough line, official records of ScarboroughÕs that were identified as such were not transcribed; some of the ScarboroughÕs of unknown association in the notes below may be of African-American descent.

All records are listed chronologically for each individual or couple.  In order to have a complete chronology for each person,  records pertaining to more than one Scarborough are repeated under each individual.  In most cases the original sources were official courthouse records; in a handful of cases the data was taken from a secondary source such as the ÒHeritage of Russell CountyÓ, one of Helen S. FoleyÕs published compilations, or a descendancy posted online.
