- The Florida State Flag:
-
On a white field with red bars extending from each corner
towards the center forming an X while the state seal occupies the center of the flag.
Florida's flag represents the land of sunshine, flowers, palm trees, rivers and
lakes. The seal features a brilliant sun, a cabbage palmetto tree, a
steamboat sailing and a Native American Seminole woman scattering flowers.
A joint resolution of the legislature in 1899, approved by state voters
in 1900, made it the official State Flag of Florida.
- The first permanent European settlement was in 1565, St. Augustine, by Spain.
- Capital City: Tallahassee
- Admission to Statehood: March 3, 1845, the 27th state.
- Motto: In God We Trust
- Nickname: Sunshine State
- Origin of state's name: Named for the day on which it was discovered,
Easter 1513 by Spanish explorer Ponce de Leon
for Pascua Florida, meaning "Flowery Easter"
- Song: "Swanee River" (Old Folks at Home), music and words were written
by Stephen C. Foster in 1851. It became the official state song in 1935.
- Animal: Florida Panther was adopted on March 29, 1982.
- Beverage: In 1967, Florida adopted a state beverage: orange juice.
- Bird: Mockingbird was adopted on April 22, 1927.
- Butterfly: Zebra Longwing (Heliconius charitonius) was officially designated as the State Butterfly in 1996.
- Fish - Freshwater: Largemouth Bass adopted in 1975.
- Fish - Saltwater: Sailfish adopted in 1975.
- Flower: Orange blossom ~ Citrus sinensis was adopted as Florida�s state flower on May 5, 1909.
- Marine Mammal: Manatee was adopted on June 6, 1975.
- Reptile: Alligator was adopted in 1987.
- Saltwater Mammal: Porpoise was adopted on June 6, 1975.
- Shell: Horse Conch had been the official shell since 1969.
- Tree: Sabal Palmetto ~ Sabal palmetto was adopted in 1953.
