STATE FLAG

OF

NEW MEXICO

Yellow and Red are the state colors of New Mexico. The red symbol in the center is the symbol for the sun used by the ancient Zia Indians. They believed that the "Great Giver" gave in groups of four. The four sets of four rays represent the four gifts:
  • The four directions - north, east, south and west.
  • The four seasons - spring, summer, fall and winter.
  • The day - sunrise, noon, evening and night.
  • Life cycle - childhood, youth, middle years and old age.
All of these are bound by a circle of life and love, which is without a beginning or end.
