        CSA BELCHERS "A"

The starting of the Confederate Civil War files, Ken takes the given names starting with A. for the entries that Greg and Gayl have in their research. Where his data agrees, disagrees or amplifies those, he has combined all data. There are errors, but corrections, disagreements or further amplifications are encouraged from the readers. These are not intended to be the final word, rather a starting point to get it right.
Readers, who are direct descendants, can certainly help us do this.

AWOL from 12/15/63 per 4/1/64 roll. Born ca. 1831, age 33, farmer, property worth $330. 1860 census of age 30, farm laborer. Married Rachael Fuller in KY in 1847. Lived in "Stop Creek of Indian" in Center Dist. of Wyoming Co. May be the Abraham Belcher who later served in Union Home Guards. Died ca. 1875."
The 2nd VA SL was org. 12/62 and Co. G was an infantry company commanded by Capt. James Russell Cook. Home county for most of the men was Wyoming Co. and most men transferred to 45th VA Bn when the SL was disbanded in about May 1863. The entry from the roster, quoted above, is referring to the enlistment or transfer to the 45th BN because the SL had been disbanded by then..
Seven Belchers, all from KY, except Abraham and he was born there, served in four of the five VA State Lines. Two of his brothers (Ali Coon and George) served in the same SL and 45th Bn. Allen and Lewis also served in the VA State Lines and later served in the 45th BN. Parents are Bartley (Bartlett) and Rachel Ramey Belche (Belcher). Broadfoot only shows him as Abram for the 45th. HDS shows him as Abraham in the 45th, but does not show the State Line Units. The State lines were a state unit and not officially part of the Confederate Army which explains why Broadfoot does not show him. Neither is he shown in the muster roll roster for the State Line and the WV Home Guard. None of the several men to serve in the State Line are shown on the muster roster. He is shown for the 45th Btln as box 382, extraction 4 and record 2631. I have found no record to support the Union Home Guard entry. If this is so, it means that he switched sides late in the war which is highly possible for someone living in KY or WV. .

Note: Enlisted unk. (maybe Sept. 1861. He was born in 1845, so would have been 16 years old) Died at Richmond VA., Feb. 10, 1863. No other record in unit microfilm. Not listed by Landrum as from Spartanburg, but in same company with Barney and Thomas. Broken Fortunes shows him in 13A and enlisted in Laurens County. In BF there is cause of death and the date of his death is 7/10/62 (several months earlier than the date taken from the microfilm) and is buried at Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, VA, grave H260. He is not listed on Broadfoot roster or the Muster Roll Roster. Barney and Thomas have no enlisted location listed.
A possible is that he was a son of Willis (1811) and Sarah (?). Alexander was born in Monroe Co., TN, in 1845, but his Father was born in Spartanburg District and died in TN. His grandparents were Jacob Belcher and Clerency (?). Jacob moved to TN sometime in the 1820s and my pedigree chart only shows one son, Willis. Great grandparents were Robert Belcher, Sr., and Nancy Hawkins. Since he was from Laurens explains why Landrum did not list him. His wife, Thuldah (? microfilm unreadable), signed with her mark to receive his pay of $65.90. Both Barnett and Thomas, in same company, were from Spartanburg which is interesting, but I do not know of the exact relationship. The pedigree I have for Willis does not have a Barney or Thomas as sons. The only son that could have possibly served in the war was Anderson (b. 1849) and I cannot connect him to any CW regiment. I strongly suspect that both, Thomas and Barney were cousins of Alexander, dont know who their parents were.

Note:The 62nd Mtd was known as Rowans regiment and maybe the 80th TN Inf. In Broadfoot list and muster roll of box 231, extraction 3 and record 2850. I believe he is Alexander from Monroe Co. TN, born 1822 and married to Margaret E. White, 2/24/1852 in Monroe TN based on information from the Belcher Gen Forum on the Internet. The Alexander of SC 13E died quite early in the war so it is unlikely that they are the same person. However, the Alexander in the 13th SC is also from Monroe Co. TN, so they could be the same. Note: Company A was known as the Contintal Guards. The regiment was known as the Pelican Regiment and was part of 1st LA Brigade. It was mustered in 6/5/61 for the duration of the war. This was a regiment of farmers, laborers and clerks which was raised around the city of New Orleans. From the known birthplaces of 974 men from the muster rolls, only 373 were native-born Louisanians. 331 men were born in Ireland, and 179 in other states along with almost 50 Germans, 24 Englishmen. Other ethnic groups included Canadians, French, Scots and Swedes. He wrote an article in the Southern Bivouac, II, April 1881. A LA Pension app. was filed by his wife Caroline. Regimental history and HDS says the company was Co. H, but I am sure it was 2H. Co. 1H was org. at Richmond in 8/61 primarily of men from Richmond. the unit was transferred to Co L, 59th VA Inf in 11/61. It was known as the Richmond Light Guard. Most of the men were captured at Roanoke Island, NC in 3/62. Co. 2H was a WV unit organized at Princeton (West ) VA in 7/61, primarily of men from Mercer Co. The Co. was officially designated Co. L, but changed to Co. 2H when the Richmond Light Guard was transferred from the regiment. The muster roll roster indicates that the 60th VA was 3rd regiment of infantry of the Wise Legion. Muster roll of box 382, extraction 4 and record 2633.

Listed in VA Archives , Broadfoot and HDS as Alexander. I am sure he is Alexander B., son of Henry D. The family starts with George who was a Revolutionary War soldier in the same regiment and company with Robert Belcher, SR., of Spartanburg. I tend to believe George and Robert are cousins. He is listed as Alx on Broadfoot and Alex on the muster roll roster for the 45th Battalion. His muster roll is box 382, extraction 4 and record 2635. Neither roster lists him for the State Line. That data taken from the regimental history.

The 1st VA SL was organized in the latter part of 1862. The officers for Co. I were sworn in on 8/26/62 with Captain John Buchanan as Commander. Many of the men came from Logan Co.
Not on Broadfoot roster or muster roll roster for SL, but in unit roster. None of those who served in the SL is noted in Broadfoot nor muster roll. The State Line units seem to be neglected and not receive as much recognitions as the militias and reserves. They were not considered a Confederate Army unit, rather unique partisan units responsible to the VA governor. Six Belchers served in the SLs with two in the 1st (Allen and Lewis). They both enlisted in the 45th BN VA Inf. His muster roll for the 45th is box 382, extraction 4, and record 2634.
If he was Allen M., he would be the son of Isham, III and Rebecca Bailey. May be Allen L., born abt. 1836, son of Asa and Clarissa Ann Milberry.

Note: On Broadfoot list as Arthur M. Belcher, but regiment history has him as Arthur M Belsher, 2nd LT., Co. A. The 2nd MS Infantry regiment was organized 5/10/61 in Corinth MS and Col. William Falkner (grandfather of the author William Falkner) was the first commander. Co. A, Tishomingo Rifles, was mustered into state army at Corinth on 2/20/61. Officers of the company were commissioned on 4/30/61. This was a one-year enlistment (Col. Falkner was not reelected Col., instead one of his Captains was elected regiment commander). Arthur is listed as one of five 2nd Lts. (2 were promoted and 2 resigned) and remained a 2nd Lt. I tend to believe he may not have reenlisted in April 1862. My reason for believing this is that he would have been promoted, killed or wounded in the remaining three years of the war. I have read a history of the regiment through the battle of the Wilderness in 1864, and the officer casualties are listed and it seems that Arthur is the only officer not listed in one of the categories. He may be the A. M. Belcher that served in the 21st AL regiment and DOD in 1864.
