        Belcher C. H.
        GA 1 City Bn Inf B C P Tr CroftsGABat C. H . GA Croft Bat Lart C
Note: On Broadfoot list as in City Batln, Columbus, but muster roster refers to this as 1st GA Battalion Infantry (number: box 374, extraction 5 and record 50). Broadfoot also lists him in the Crofts Battery of the Columbus Light Art., but no reference to this unit in the muster roll. Both were probably the same org.

        Belcher C. T. (F. or J.)
        AL 3 Res F C P
Note: On Broadfoot list as C. T. Muster roll roster has him as C. F. (number box 374, extraction 4, record 907) and E. P. with an alternate name of J. (number: box 374, extraction 4 and record 908). Still another muster roll of box 374, extraction 4, and record 910 which has initial of F. and alternate name of C. J. A third muster roll for E. J. with an alternate name of C. J. (box 374, extraction 4 and record 909). I believe all four of these initial are for the same person . William was also in the 3 Res Al which converted to the 63rd AL Inf in March 1865. C. T. does not appear on the 63 AL roster.

Belcher Cadmus VA Johnston Art Capt. Epes C P
Note: He was a private in Captain Epes company of the VA Johnston Heavy Art. Listed as Cad and Cadimus on VA Archives and Cadimus on Broadfoot list. Muster roll of box 382, extraction 4 and record 2648. William Cadimus was in both units and may have been related.

        Calvin Belcher
Residence not listed; Enlisted on 1/1/1862 at Estillville as a Private. On 1/1/1862 he transferred into "D" Co. VA 37th Infantry (date and method of discharge not given) He was listed as: * On rolls 12/15/1862 (place not stated) He also had service in: VA 48th Infantry source: - The Virginia Regimental Histories Series

        Calvin S. VA 37 Inf D C 1862 P

Note: Served in 48th VA Inf. Co. ? prior to 1/1/62 when he transferred into 37th VA Inf., Co. D as a Private. Enlisted at Estillville for 3 years and was present 12/15/62. Little doubt that he was in both units, but he may have served in the 37th first. The muster roster lists both units, but the 37th (number 382, extraction 4 and record 2649) and an entry of 48 VA. This could mean that he transferred to the 48th. For the 48th (number box 382, extraction 4, and record 2650), there is no reference to the 37th. Broadfoot lists both units, but he is not listed in the VA Archives.

        Belcher Charles
        VA 60 Inf A C Surv
Note: Roster says he was on post war roster of 60th and infers he may have served in another unit. No enlistment or muster out date. The regiment was organized 8/13/61 to 3/2/65. It mustered out at Waynesboro, NC, a month before Appomattox. There were 1908 men to serve in the regiment. Wonder how you get a postwar roster when the regiment was disbanded a month before the end of the war. Probably a brother of Granville W. of 57th VA. There were 10 other Belchers to serve in the 60th VA, but don't how they are related, but they must be. He is not listed by Broadfoot or VA Archives. Data comes from HDS.

TN Rifle Regiment. This may mean that all three of these are the same regiment. It could mean that the 37th was part of the TN Rifles and assigned to the 7th TN Prov. Army.

        Belcher Charles P.
VA 24 Inf D C P-SGT at Pickett's Charge Note: Residence not listed; Enlisted on 6/4/1861 at Lynchburg, VA as a Private. On 6/4/1861 he mustered into "D" Co. VA 24th Infantry (date and method of discharge not given) He was listed as: * Sick (date and place not stated) (Summer of 1861) * Wounded 7/1/1863 Gettysburg, PA * Detailed 9/15/1863 (place not stated) (As brigade foragemaster) * Deserted 7/3/1864 (place not stated) * Confined 7/5/1864 Bermuda Hundred, VA (Estimated day) * Oath Allegiance 7/10/1864 Bermuda Hundred, VA (Released) He was described at enlistment as: 6' 4", fair complexion, brown eyes, light hair source:- The Virginia Regimental Histories Series.
Color bearer for unit at Picketts Charge, Gettysburg. Referred to as tall mountaineer. On Broadfoot list. On Broadfoot and muster roll of box 382, extraction 4 and number 2651.

The following is taken from the Internet history of the 24th VA Infantry regarding Picketts-Pettigrews Charge and the heroic action taken by Charles. "Walter Harrison, inspector general for Pickett's division, described the scene by stating: kiln the attack it was heavy but the rear. unheeded; in the retreat it became terrible." However, a few men of the 24th Virginia were able to find their way back to Seminary Ridge where the charge began. There the men bathed their wounds in a little creek. Clear water soon ran crimson with blood. Farther down the creek, troops quenched their ravinous thirst with the same rose-colored liquid.

"A heartbroken Gen. Pickett mingled among the survivors of his division. When he approached the small group of men from the 24th Virginia, Charles Belcher waved the colors of the regiment and exclaimed; "General, let us go it again ! " The words quickly lost their meaning as Gen. Kemper passed by on a stretcher.
"General Lee, who had ridden out to greet his men, spotted Kemper. Lee inquired about his wound and whether there was anything he could do for the wounded general. In great pain, Kemper replied, "Yes General Lee, do full justice to this division for its work today." With bowed head, Lee said: "I will." Soldiers then took Kemper to the rear. Suffering over a fifty percent casualty rate, Pickett's division was butchered at Gettysburg. Of the nearly 4,300 men in the division, 232 were killed, 1,157 wounded and 1,499 captured or missing. Kemper's brigade had 731 casualties. Of these, the 24th Virginia lost 18 killed, 71 wounded,40 wounded and taken prisoner and 50 missing. No other regiment in Kemper's brigade

Note: I have included the following Charles Wesley because he may have served in both the CSA and Union, and then there may have been two of them (father and son with one a Rebel and the other a Yank).

        Belcher Charles W. (Wesley)
        AL 1 Cav G U 8/10/61 P
Note: All the information I have on him comes from the internet. He enlisted on 10 Aug 1861 at Fort Pinson AL as a Private. Fort Pinson is in the hill country of North AL where many of the vols. were loyal to the Union. 1 AL was org. Oct 1862 and has a long battle history. HDS has not posted a roster for this regiment. He appears on Broadfoot list, but not on the muster roll list,
Identifying the Alabama Charles Wesley Belchers is interesting. There was a Charles W. (Sr.), in Al, born 3/27/1817 and married to Elizabeth James. They had a son, Charles W. (Jr.), born 1840 and married to Mary Jane Glover. One of these may have served for the Union and the other for the Confederates. Another possibility is that only one served, in both the Union and Confederate army. If it was father against son, or only one of them and he switched sides, it makes for interesting speculations. Since the regiment did not organize until 10/62 and he enlisted in 8/62, it is quite possible that he never served and enlisted in the 19 AL two days later. .

        Belcher Charles W. (Wesley)
        AL 19th Inf.. C C 8/12/61 P
Note: Enlisted 8/12/61 in Fort Pinson AL (this was just two days after Charles W. enlisted in the 1st AL Cav, a Union regiment and the same enlistment place. This seems to be an interesting coincidence). I do not believe he enlisted at Fort Pinson. Company C was the "Jefferson Warriors" from Jefferson County (N. Central part of state. Birmingham is the major city). The 19th AL Inf was organized 8/14/61 at Huntsville, AL (Madison Co., a north border county adjacent to Lincoln Co. TN). The regiment surrendered 4/26/65 (Only 76 members of the regiment were present at the surrender).
Broadfoot lists him for 19th Inf. and also has B. A. Belcher in Co. K The internet has a complete regiment roster posted and Charles is the only Belcher to serve in the regiment. Muster roll is box 374, extraction 4 and number 906. I have also read of a Charles M., with identical data, in the 19th. I believe they are the same person HDS has not yet posted a roster. There was a Charles Wesley Belcher, born 1840.

        Belcher Charles Wesley
        VA 72Mil Inf C 3/20/62
Note: The 1860 Russell Co.. VA Census showed him, age 28, wife Elsey (Dye), age 24, and 6 kids. Lived two houses from George H. Son of John Belcher and Mary Monk. His brother Samuel was in 72nd Militia as well as Samuel's son John T. George W. Belcher was also in 72th and may have been a brother or uncle. On Broadfoot and muster roll of box 382, extraction 4 and record 2652. The 72nd VA Militia was from Russell County, VA and mustered in 3/20/62 at Lebanon. They say service for 10 to 20 days and 695 men served in the unit.

        Belcher Christian
        LA 4 Inf E C P
Note: The only place where I have seen this name is in the Muster Roll which is box 387, extraction 2 and record 3270. There was a Clifford in the same company which was listed in the LA Confederate Soldiers, but no one else in the regiment. They may turn out to be the same person with some confussion on first names.

        Belcher Christophher Columbus GA 11 Inf. I C 7/10/61 P-1st SGT W. 2Man Funktown
Note: Enlisted as a Private and was promoted to SGT. Severely wounded 2nd Manassas VA, 30 Aug 1862, and promoted to 1st Sgt. the same day. Wounded and disabled at Funkstown, MD, 10 July 1863. Roll for 31 Aug 1864, last on file, shows him absent (NHS systen says it was without leave) with leave from 15 June, no later record. Maybe brother of Samuel P., a LT. in same unit. Residence Randolph County GA. There were three others from Randolph County: Samuel P. (same unit) and Thomas M. P. and Elijah C. who served in the 47th GA Inf. I believe all were related. A wild speculation is that he may have deserted the 11 GA (Confederate) and went to Indiana and enlisted in the 29th IN Inf (Union). There were definitely connections between the GA and IN Belchers. In HDS as Christopher Columbus and Broadfoot as Columbus, but is not on the Muster roll roster.
NOTE: Don't know much about the Indiana Christopher.
