        Belcher H (Henry) C. SC 1 Inf A C (Should be SC 1 CAV)

        H. (Henry Clay) SC 7 Inf C C P 1SCCAV H. C. (Henry Clay) SC 1 Cav A C Surv

Note: The only data I have for H. C. of the 1st SC Inf comes from the internet which states he enlisted Unk., Mustered out Unk. Went to TN Confederate Soldiers Home in 1913. Lived in Davidson Co. TN. He is not in Spartanburg Belchers noted in Landrum. Not sure which SC 1st Inf. There were eight units noted as 1st SC Inf. during the war. I believe the reference to the 1st Inf is in error and should be the 1st SC Cav. The company is the same for both entries

The reference that H. and H. C were in the 7th SC Inf and 1st SC Cav is from rosters in Caldwell’s History of a Brigade. He is on the Broadfoot list and muster roll for the 1st Cav. in box 381, extraction 2, and record 3427. But no reference in Broadfoot or Muster roll for the 7th Inf. The 1st SC Cav. organized in 10/61 with Companies A and G being organized in Abbeville, SC. The last action of the 1st Cav. was at Moccasin Swamp on 4/10/65. Don’t know when he transferred from the 7th Infantry to the Cav., maybe in 4/62 when the Army reorganized.

He could be related to Jacob Belcher (son of Robert Belcher, Sr., my gggg grandfather) who moved to TN in the 1820s. Alexander Belcher, from TN, served in the 13th SC Inf. (son of Willis and his grandfather was Jacob Belcher), but I doubt it. I believe he is the H. C. Belcher, age 27, living in Magnolia Township, Abbeville Co. per the 1870 Census. If this is true then he must have moved to TN sometime after 1870 in order to qualify to live in the Old Soldiers Home.

I believe he is from the Edgefield Belchers that go back to Robert and Susannah in the late 1700s. His father was Robert Edmund. Belcher (1811 to 1850) and mother Rebecca. There were three other Belchers in the 1st SC Cav., and all in the same company. John H. and James N. are his brothers and s/o Robert Edmond and Rebecca Belcher. W. H. is his cousin, s/o William Washington Belcher. Henry, James and John are probably half-brothers of Edwin Belcher (73 PA Inf. Union, see entry on Edwin). J. C (Clinton). Belcher was in the same company of the 7th Inf. who was probably a 1st cousin . Broadfoot lists the J. C., but not the H. C..

        Henry C. Belcher

Residence Clayton County GA; Enlisted on 9/25/1861 as a Private. On 9/25/1861 he mustered into "I" Co. GA 30th Infantry (date and method of discharge not given) He was listed as: * On rolls 12/31/1862 (place not stated) (No further record) Source:- Roster of Confederate Soldiers of Georgia 1861-1865

        Belcher Henry C. GA 30 Inf I C 9/25/61 P

Note: Clayton Co... (Clayton Invincibles). Enl. 25 Sept. 1861 and on roll 31 Dec. 1862. No other record. Not on Broadfoot or CW in GA, but in HDS and muster roll for Henry L. of box 226, extraction 62. William T. Belcher was in Co. K.

        Belcher Henry D. VA 8 Cav H C 5/5/62

Note: I have a list of 8, possibly 9 Belchers that may have served in the 8th VA Cav. There is some confusion as to who they were. It may turn out that only 3 or 4 actually served. I will show the list to see if it helps to understand better. On regimental history roster, Broadfoot and muster roll of box 382, extraction 4 and record 2678.

        Name Company Data source

Henry, Jr. Troop H VA (VA Archives)

        Henry, Sr. H VA

Henry D. H VA BF (Broadfoot) RH (Regiment history) (MR 382 4 2678)

        Isaac H VA

        James Harvey H BF RH

        L. F. E neither

Philip P. H VA BF RH

Waddy (C.) H VA BF RH

        Z. P. , (Jr.) E VA

As can be seen, the only reference for Henry JR., is the Archives and there is no D. The regiment history states he is a Private, enlisted 5/5/62 in Mercer Co. WV. On horse detail 10/31/64. Company H (Tazewell Troop) was enlisted 7/25/61 for 12 months, was reorganized 5/14/62 and renlisted for the duration of the war in 3/64. The company was composed of men from Mercer Co. WV and Tazewell Co, VA. This very well illustrates the problems associated with determining who these people were.

NOTE: The three Henrys are noted in the Belcher Blue using the reference Vol 9, p. 305, but only one of them Henry D. is shown in the VA Regimental Series, 8 VA Csav. by Jack L. Dickinson. Only the four names noted above with RH are listed in the roster

Belcher Henry (Frank) VA 28 Inf B C

Note: All that is known is that he "also" served in 28th VA. There were at least 3 others from VA that are possibles. On Broadfoot list and muster roll of box 383, extraction 4 and record 2680.

        Henry J. Belcher

born: 1829 Residence: Chesterfield County Va. Company A 22nd Virginia Infantry Battalion. NOTE: Believe he was also in the 2nd VA Art.
