Note: Enl. Feb. 9, 1863 as Private Co. C (William’s Rifles). Wounded at Plymouth NC, Apr. 17, 1864. Captured in hospital at Richmond on Apr. 3, 1865. Paroled at Newport News after taking oath on June 15, 1865. Data taken from regimental history.

Listed in VA Archives and Broadfoot lists him as I. Belcher with Isom D. and Isom, Jr. in 36th Battalion. Muster roll of box 382, extraction 4, record 2687. A second muster roll of box 382, extraction, and record 2688. There is still a third muster roll for J. Belcher, same company, of box 382, extraction 4, and record 2691. A fourth muster roll for John of box 382, extraction 4, record 2705 with an alternate name of Isham Belcher. The regimental roster does not show a J. Belcher, so I tend to believe all four of these records are for the same person. There was a W. H. in the same company.

        Isom G. Belcher

Residence not listed; 22 years old. Enlisted on 9/3/1861 at Jeffersonville, VA as a Private. On 9/3/1861 he mustered into "C" Co. VA 23rd Battn Infantry (date and method of discharge not given) He was listed as: * Paroled 6/12/1865 (place not stated) He was described at enlistment as: 5' 10.0", blue eyes, light hair Other Information: died 12/29/1891 Source:- The Virginia Regimental Histories Series.

Note: I believe this Isom also served in the 45th VA prior to serving in the 23rd Batt'n. An entry in Belcher Blue says that Isom G. , born 1827, in VA, enlisted 3 Sep 1861, age 22, Big sewell, Co, B 36th VA Regiment, vol. 4, p. 124. If he was born in 1827 he could not have been 22 in 1861. My records show that Isom Belcher, Jr., was in the 36th. I have entered the HDS entries for Isom G and Isom, Jr., which tends to sort them out.

Isom G. Belcher Residence not listed; 22 years old. Enlisted on 9/3/1861 at Big Sewell, VA as a Private. On 9/3/1861 he mustered into "L" Co. Note: From the two entries for Isom G. you cannot be sure which unit he served in first, but it appears that the 45th was first.

(60th VA) and James Harvey (8th VA Cav.). He could also be the son of Moses Belcher and Nancy Tabor. Married Martha Deaton. Probably from Tazewell, VA, Falls Mill Section. Isom G. is not listed by Broadfoot or muster roll for either unit

Pearisburg is in Giles Co., VA. The parole 3/10/65 ( month before the end of the war) may mean that he had been a prisoner.

Broadfoot lists two Isham/Isom in 36th, (an Isom D. and an Isom Jr.) and so does the muster roll, but can’t tell which is which. HDS shows only Ison JR. and I tend to believe both are the same person since both were listed in Co. B2, Muster roll for Isom Jr. is box box 382, extraction 4, and record 2689. For Isom D. it is box 382, extracxtion 4 and record 2690. The CWSR also has an Isom D. in 36th B and Isom J. in 36th B. I have pedigree with lots of Ishams from VA, but can’t really sort all of them out. William Harrison Belcher was in the same company.

Note: On Broadfoot list and muster roll of box 380, extraction 1, and record 3796. This unit existed from Aug. 1864 until Dec 1864. There was a Joshua Belcher with an alternate name of Isam who served in the 3rd MO Cav. as noted in the CWSR file. These could all be the same person and served in both units. HDS has not posted a roster or history. .
