Arrived 3/15/65 Aikens Landing, VA for exchange. On rolls 3/16/65 Camp Lee Richmond, VA after exchange. Service identical to Costley. Married to Costleys sister Lucy E. Listed in VA Archives, Broadfoot and muster roll of box 382, extraction 4, and record 2749. On CWSR. Interesting conflict of data: In the application for membership into Sons of Confederate Veterans, Camp Wharton-Stuart, by Robert G. Harris, it is stated that Peter is the brother of Costley and was captured the same day by Sheridans forces at Winchester, VA. MY data shows Peter as Costleys Brother-in-law, not brother. Costley was married to a Belcher so this may be the case. Need to find family pedigree. Probably the Peter Belcher on VA disabled list for 1883 for artificial limb for Patrick County. Peter F. Belcher Robert SC 3 Reserve Inf G C 9/4/62 P Surv Note: . The reserves was commanded by Col. W. J. Olford, 4 Sept. 1862, and Joel Farmer was Captain. This is probably Robert Belcher, (b. 1810, d. 1867), father of Mary Malissa Belcher and Elias Belcher. He was referred to as Major Belcher but was enlisted as a Private. He would have been age 52, which may explain why he was in a reserve unit because Militia units would accept older people. He was not mentioned by Landrum as being from Spartanburg. CWSR. Robert H. Belcher Residence not listed; Enlisted on 4/2/1862 at Tazewell County, VA as a Private. On 4/2/1862 he mustered into "I" Co. Belcher Robert S. (L.) GA 1 Inf B Hamlets C P Tr 48 GA Robert GA 48 Inf G C 5/15/62 3/13/64 P W DD Surv Note: I believe he first enlisted in 1st GA Inf in Co. B, also known as Hamlets or Humilets Company. Transferred to 48th GA Inf as a Private 15 May 1862. Wounded on skirmish line (date not known) and discharged 13 Mar 1864 for disability. Co. G of 48th were from Twiggs Co. GA, and known as the "Slappy Guards." Unit formed 22 Mar 1862. Son of Beverly (b. 1760, d. 1835) and Francis Mosley (b. 1783) and brother of Obediah (b. 1805 in SC), John (39th Ga/10th TX)and William (30th GA). There are three entries in Broadfoot and muster roll. For 1 GA, Co. B, Broadfoot is Robert and muster roll is Roberts in box 226, extraction 5, and record 74. Broadfoot has Hamlets Co. and muster roll has Humilets Co in box 226, extraction 5, and record 75. It is my assumption that Hamlets/Humlets co. is the same as Co. B, 1st GA. For 48th, Broadfoot has him as Robert S., HDS has him as Robert L., and muster roll as Roberts in box 226, extraction 5, and record 76. CWSR has a Roberts in both units and I assume this would be Robert S.

Belcher Rowan (Roman) P. MS 3 Inf A/G C 9/18/61 P Note: Live Oak Rifles, mustered in Ocean Springs, Miss. 18 Sept. 1861. Belcher Rufus K. VA 59 Inf I C 7/15/61 P Tr 60 VA Rufus VA 60 INf K C P Tr 26Btln Rufus V. VA 26Bn Edgars Inf C C4/29/62 Corp-SGT POWPAR PLO Surv Note: Identifying Rufus is rather confusing. In the regiment roster for the 60th VA and HDS, the name is spelled Rufus Bechner (I assume it is a mispelling and is Belcher. Broadfoot has one Rufus K. in the 59th VA Inf. Co. 2I and muster roll of box 382, extraction 4, and record 2761 with reference to 26th Battalion VA. HDS does not have the 26th VA Bn. entered. For 26th, box 382, extraction 4, and record 2758 with reference to 59th VA. Data for that comes from the internet roster of the 26th Bn. No muster roll for 60th VA. CWSR has one Rufus K who served in 59 VA and 26VA Batt'n. I believe he enlisted 7/15/61 at Princeton, Mercer Co. WV in Co. I, 59 VA Inf. Absent sick on Jan. 1862 roll. Present on 4/29/62. Sevice is listed in VA Archives for this unit.
Many of the men in the 59th VA transferred to the 60th VA. The history of the 60th VA states that he also served in Co. K, 60th VA as a private (date and residence not known). The only other comment is that he was "hospitalized 4/13/65, Clarksburg, WV with ulcers." This is after the war and probably a Union hospital which may infer that he served in the 26th BN prior to serving in the 60th. A Rufus enlisted in 26th VA Inf. Battalion Co. C as a Corp and promoted to Sgt. Enlisted on 4/29/62 at White sulphur Springs, Greenbrier Co. WV. The 26th Bn VA inf was organized 5/20/62 and mustered out 4/12/65 at Christianburg, VA. He was captured and Wounded in action (very serious) right thigh flesh wound, 18 inches long) at Winchester, VA 9/19/64. Dont have the numbers for the 26th during this battle, but if Rufus was actually in the 60th at this time, he was one of 68 men captured and made POWs at the battle of Winchester (Opequan). In Winchester field hospital and wound treated by simple dressing 9/19/64. Sent to U. S. hospital at Baltimore, Maryland. POW Fort McHenry 2/11/65. sent to Point Lookout, MD for exchange on 2/20/65. at general hospital at Richmond, VA, 2/26/65. furloughed from hospital on 3/8/65. Paroled at Charleston, WV 6/12/65. Age 25, 510", light complexion, light hair, black eyes. He may very well have not served Probably Rufus V., son of Isham. III and Rebecca Bailey. b. abt. 1839 and married Melvina Belcher, daughter of Asa and Clarinda Ann Miller. Melvina had a brother, Jonathan R. in 60th VA. Fairly sure about the Rufus K. in 59 and 26, but maybe another Rufus in the 60th..
