Belcher Charles W. (Wesley)
AL 1 Cav G U 8/10/61 P
Note:
All the information I have on him comes from the internet. He
enlisted on 10 Aug 1861 at Fort Pinson AL as a Private. Fort Pinson
is in the hill country of North AL where many of the vols. were loyal
to the Union. 1 AL was org. Oct 1862 and has a long battle history.
HDS has not posted a roster for this regiment. He appears on
Broadfoot list, but not on the muster roll list,
Identifying the Alabama Charles Wesley Belchers is interesting. There
was a Charles W. (Sr.), in Al, born 3/27/1817 and married to
Elizabeth James. They had a son, Charles W. (Jr.), born 1840 and
married to Mary Jane Glover. One of these may have served for the
Union and the other for the Confederates. Another possibility is that
only one served, in both the Union and Confederate army. If it was
father against son, or only one of them and he switched sides, it
makes for interesting speculations. Since the regiment did not
organize until 10/62 and he enlisted in 8/62, it is quite possible
that he never served and enlisted in the 19 AL two days later. Not on
CSR..

Note:
Enlisted 8/12/61 in Fort Pinson AL (this was just two days
after Charles W. enlisted in the 1st AL Cav, a Union regiment and the
same enlistment place. This seems to be an interesting coincidence).
I do not believe he enlisted at Fort Pinson. Company C was the
"Jefferson Warriors" from Jefferson County (N. Central part of state.
Birmingham is the major city). The 19th AL Inf was organized 8/14/61
at Huntsville, AL (Madison Co., a north border county adjacent to
Lincoln Co. TN). The regiment surrendered 4/26/65 (Only 76 members of
the regiment were present at the surrender).
Broadfoot lists him for 19th Inf. and also has B. A. Belcher in Co. K
The internet has a complete regiment roster posted and Charles is the
only Belcher to serve in the regiment. Muster roll is box 374,
extraction 4 and number 906. I have also read of a Charles M., with
identical data, in the 19th. I believe they are the same person HDS
has not yet posted a roster. There was a Charles Wesley Belcher, born
1840. See pedigree included with Arthur Malone to get a feel for who
he was. On CSR.
