        Note:
Henry's service is a little confusing. The muster roll says Henry in the 80th NY with a reference to 35 NY Vols. and VRC (Veteran's Reserve Corps) Co. H. Muster roll is box 551, extraction, and record 41. Broadfoot (Henry H. or Henry C.), Muster roll for James H, 80th NY, box 551, extraction 9, record 42 with alternate name of Henry C. A James H. (35 NY) has box 551, extraction 9 and record 43. HDS do not have the entry for the 35th, (there was a James N. Belcher in the 35th) but do have the 80th and VRC. If he served in the 35th it would have to of been between 6/11/61 and 6/5/63 when unit was disbanded. Record says he enlisted on 10/28/62 at Whitetown, NY as a Private in the 80th NY Inf. Co. A. Wounded at Gettysburg. 7/1/63. Transferred, date/unit not stated and served in VRC. Discharged 7/22/65. I believe they all are the same person, but is he Henry or James H. NFR.

HDS for the 111th IL notes that 37 men became POW, but date and place for all of them is unknown. The Andersonville list contains records of over 37,000 of the estimated 45,000 who were inprisoned there and there are 11 Belchers listed involving 10 men. For the 111 IL Inf., the names of Henry, Levi, J. L. and S., however, only Henry and Levi show on the 111th roster. Muster Roll Box 539, Extraction 6, and record 1267. Res. Patoka, Marion Co.IL. On Broadfoot and muster roll of box 557, extraction and record 2656. The muster roll refers to Henry Brown 84th IN. . Not sure what that means, but it could mean that after deserting he went to Indiana and enlisted as a bounty jumper. HDS roster for the 84 IN has no Belcher listed, but Henry Brown, a resident of Winchester, IN, enlisted as a Private 3/1/64. This is a date consistent with his desertion of 9/7/63. Henry Brown was KIA at Nashville, TN, 12/12/64. It may seem a stretch that he would go from Vermont to Indiana, but he may have moved to IN trying to stay out of the war and the draft caught up with him. NFR
