        Note:
Enlisted 8/13/62 as a Private in 89th IL Infand mustered in 8/25/62. Discharge 1/1/63 to enlist in Mississippi Marine Brigade For 89, the muster roll is box 539, extraction 6, and record 1270 with reference to Miss Marine Brigade. The MS Marine Brigade was organized in the summer of 1862 as part of the Union Army's River Ram Fleet. It was organized by the Ellet brothers and was a unit intended to operate against the Confederate partisans along the Western rivers. It used specially outfitted transport boats to pursue guerrillas inland. Due in part to squabbles among the Brigade leaders and Union Headquarters, the unit was disbanded after only 17 months of service in Aug. 1864. Residence Saline County, IL. With the brigade disbanding and his enlistment was not up, I believe James transferred or enlisted on 9/23/64 as a Private in 12 IL Cav. He mustered in 9/27/64 in an. unassigned Company. For the 12 Cav the residence was Montmorence, IL which is different from the residence given in the 89 IL. I note the residence of the James of the 12th CAV is different from the James of the 149th, but looking at the enlistment date for James of the 149th IL it is possible that it could be the same person . For 12 Cav, Muster roll of box 539, extraction 6, and record 1269. He Enlisted 2/7/65 as a Privatein 149th IL Inf. Mustered in 2/8/65 Died 3/17/65 at Cleveland, TN. Res. Woodbury, Cumberland Co. IL. While the Sixth expected to become a part of the Army of the Potomac the fortunes of war placed most of its service inthe southwest, on the Mississippi River and Gulf of Mexico. The regiment was recruited for the infantry arm of the serviceand served as such until July, 1863, when General Banks converted it into a regiment of heavy artillery on account ofits valuable and faithful service, his official order statingthat the regiment is " to retain, until otherwise officiallydesignated, its infantry number, and to, have the organization, pay, clothing, and equipment prescribed by law and regulationsfor troops of the artillery arm." The regiment therefore is frequently referred to as the " Sixth Infantry " and also as the " Sixth Heavy Artillery." (copied from regiment history in HDS. The 83rd USCT (New) regiment was organized from the 2nd KS Colored Inf. 12/13/64. The date of death indicates he died prior to the new 83rd, but after the old 83rd was disbanded. Based on his death date, I suspect he was still in the 2nd KS, but was included with the new 83rd. That regiment had 34 KIA/MW and 211 enlisted men to DOD which seems to be a quite high number. Reading the history of the Battery, they were in several battles that had high casualties, but their survival rate was very good. They had no officers to die, three enlisted men were KIA/MW and 25 others died from disease of accidents. These numbers are deceptive unless you look at the bigger picture. From the dates, it appears that John was never in the same company with McKinley.

John only served the last year of the war, but would have been engaged in several interesting battles as noted by HDS: .... the spring of 1864, when the battle of Cloyd's mountain was fought. In May there was an affair at New River bridge, in which the regiment participated. It then started on the long march to Lynchburg and the subsequent retreat from that place. It then engaged in the battle of Winchester in July, in which the Federal forces were defeated after a well-contested fight that continued from early in the morning until 9 o'clock at night.

The 23d lost in this engagement 153 men, 10 of whom were commissioned officers. Nothing of importance transpired until in September at Berryville, where the regiment was sent out on picket. A general engagement was brought on, in which there was desperate fighting. After the usual amount of marching and counter-marching the battle of Opequan was fought, in which the regiment captured about 200 men. On Oct. 19, occurred the battle of Cedar creek, in which a defeat was turned into victory by the timely arrival of Gen. Sheridan. The following winter was spent in West Virginia, and the collapse of the Southern Confederacy in the spring made the regiment's services no longer required. It was therefore mustered out on July 26, 1865. Source: The Union Army, vol. 2
