Enlisted 8/5/62 at Adddison, NY as a Private. Deserted on 3/8/63 at Hope Landing, VA. 25 year old. In Broadfoot and muster roll of box 551, extraction 9, and record 47.
NELSON BELCHER enlisted at Elmira, New York on Aug. 5, 1862, at the age of 25, claiming farmer as his occupation, and Steuben, New York as his birthplace. He is listed as a "deserter, having not returned at the expiration of his furlough in the morning report for March 8, 1863. One remark in the regimental return of March 11, 1863 lists "Died", but all other comments on regimental descriptions books state deserted.

NELSON BELCHER that deserted the Civil War in March, 1863 from Camp Hope Landing, Va. It is believed that the same NELSON BELCHER who married in Ashtabula, Ohio, on October 12, 1865 to Catherine Somerville, claiming that both were formerly from Canada, now both residing in Ashtabula, who is my ancestor. We think we have an unusual story, and wonder if there are any other stories of people who had deserted the Civil War and families, and have been discovered through research to have lived out another life. The facts that suggest that the man is one in the same are many, but we are unable to prove the connection as we do not have a date of birth for their NELSON and we do mine, nor do we have parents names for mine, but we do theirs, and we believe that would be all it would take. My NELSON claims New York as his birthplace in 1837 ( claiming to be 73 in 1910 census) or 8 (death certificate states 1838), with his parents born in Pennsylvania (he does however, contradict himself on parents birthplace in several censuses, but twice claims Pa, and Pa. is listed on his death certificate as parents birthplace). Their NELSON BELCHER is from New York, born within two years of mine (they have censuses showing him to be 15 in 1850, 25 in 1860, and 25 in 1862 when he enlists) and several of his brothers enlisted in PA, as it is very close in proximity Steuben County New York. Their NELSON disappears in early 1863, with no future. My NELSON appears in 1865, and I can find no past before the marriage in 1865, leaving a short two year gap to fill. 1865, the year that the war was over, he comes from Canada with a (four month pregnant) bride to the United States, obviously, there is strong indication that he had been in Canada at least as early as May or June 1865, unless of course, the child is not his. Surely, he knew she was pregnant by four months, though, and it is unlikely that a man who would desert one family would take on another man's child as his own, although we cannot rule that out as a possibility. As stated, he claims to have been "from" St. Catherine's C.W., on church record where he was married, but on every census from 1870 until 1910, he gives New York as his birthplace, as well as on his death certificate, which would indicate that he was only living in Canada before coming to Ohio, not born there. Many deserters went to Canada during the Civil War. Catherine Somerville was, in fact born in Canada, therefore it is likely that she was there (if and) when he got there, and that would have been as late as June, 1865, as indicated above. Now we have an even shorter period of time to account for between desertion, and placing the same man in Canada. I know of no way to find a person in Canada in 1863 or 4, especially one who does not want to be found. I am not even sure where in Canada to look for Catherine's birth, as there are two St. Catherine's in Canada. C.W. is Ontario (Canada West), but her death certificate indicates Montreal as her birthplace, and that is where the other St. Catherine's is located. Also, her mother had children in Canada, then Vermont, then Canada again, indicating Montreal as the likelier place to look, as it is near Vermont. Again, I don't even know where to start to look for a person living in St. Catherine's Canada in the 1860's. I would need to find Catherine's family, and assume NELSON was there with them.
