Note:
Enlisted 9/5/61 as a Sgt. in Co. B. Reenlisted
1/18/64 and promoted to 1st Sgt same day. POW at Cold
Harbor, 6/3/64. HDS says paroled, but no date or time.
Confined at Andersonville and exchanged 12/1/64, no place
stated. On Andersonville prisoner list, no. 44294. This
regiment saw some pretty heavy casualties. 7 officers
were KIA/MW and 0 DOD. Enlisted men had 154 KIA/MW and
169 DOD. About 1/3 of those killed were killed at Cold
Harbor, the day Paren was captured. For 6/3/64, the
casualties were KIA 46, Wounded 149, Pow 26 and 3
missing. The following couple of paragraphs from the
regiment history on HDS puts this in perspective.
On March 26, 1864, the regiment was reunited at
Portsmouth, Va., and was assigned to the Star
Brigade-Heckman's (1st) Brigade, 2d Division, 18th Corps.
Proceeding to the Bermuda Hundred region the regiment was
engaged at Port Walthall Junction, May 6, losing 4 killed
and 15 wounded. At Arrowfield Church, May 9, it lost 13
killed and 49 wounded. On May 16 the regiment was
outflanked at Drury's Bluff, losing 20 killed, 64
wounded, and about 70 prisoners. Here Gen. Heckmanwas
captured.
Transferred to the north side of the James, the Star
Brigade, now commanded by Gen. George H. Stannard, was in
the general assault at Cold Harbor, June 3, the 25th
Regt. Losing 75 killed or mortally wounded, 122 wounded
(not mortally), and 32 prisoners, a total of 229 or 76
per cent of the 300 officers and men who reported for
duty that morning. Thus the loss of the regiment during a
period of less than four weeks was over 460 officers and
men, of whom 112 were killed or mortally wounded.
It should be noted that the numbers mentioned in the
history, which is taken from the MA Soldiers, Sailors, &
Marines in CW, is noticably different from those taken
from the regiment roster as posted in HDS. History states
75 KIA, but roster 46 and POWs in history was 32, while
in roster it was 26. Another example that you do not know
what to believe when you study the CW.
Muster out date not given, but the regiment mustered out
7/13/65 at Readville, MA. He is not on Broadfoot and there is
no muster roll, but he does show in the MA Soldiers roll
quoted above. NFR.
