War Record of Bartley (Bailey) Belcher
Bartlett stated that he served in the American Revolution. "The Amercan Genealogical Index "has Bartlett as being born in Virginia, applied for a Revolutionary War Pension in Tennessee: Va rev war records volume 54.
He enlisted in the spring of 1780 in Patrick County, Va., under Captain Elias Shelton for three months. However, his father had been drafted into the American army and deserted. His father was returned to the army and required to serve 6 months. Bartlet volunteered to serve as a substitute for his father, under Captain George Waller and Lieutenant Turley Choice. He marched with this army from Henry County, Va to Hillsborough, NC. Here they joined the main American army under General Stevens, Colonel William Fortner (?) and Major Purnel. A battle ensued at Camden, in which Bartlett received two wounds in his right arm. He did not join his company again until it arrived at Guilsford Courthouse. He was ordered to the hospital, but was allowed to go his home which was not to far away. The company was again ordered to march to Hillsborough and Bartlett arrived at Henry Courthouse to march, but being ill he was furloughed to go home by Colonel James Penn of Henry County. His six months expired before he recovered his health. In the winter or next spring Bartlet volunteered to go the army to stop Cornwallis' march through Virginia. Under captain William Claud, Colonel James Lyon, and Lieutenant William Cortan he marched towards Hick's ferry on Dan River. Bartlett was verbally discharged by his colonel on Cascade Creek.
.....In the early summer of 1781, Bartlett was drafted under Captain John Smith and Lieutenant Emerson to march to Prince Edward's courthouse, to where the army under General Robert Lawsoin, Colonel Purnel and Major Purnell was. They marched to Carter's Ferry on the James River, but were prevented from crossing by the British Army on the other side. They marched to Williamsburg and then, after the British left, marched back to Mobing Hills. Bartlett remained here until discharged after serving two months.
.....Bartlett married Alsey (Alice) Lawson in Patrick County, Va on 20 July 1799. Alice applied 15 September 1849 while residing in Lee County, Va. Her application states that they married at the home of her brother-in-law Richard Davis. They were married by Rev. John Nun, a Baptist Minister. After residing many years in Virginia, Bartlett and Alice moved to Hawkins County, Tennessee. After at least 10 years they returned to Lee County, Va where Bartlett died.
.....Bartlett Belcher of Hawkins Co. TN, private in the company of Captain Shelton in the regiment of Colonel Fortner in the Virginia Line for ten months, was placed on the Jonesboro, Tn pension roll at 33.33 per annum under the Act of 1832. Certificate 19043 was issued 02 August 18 ( ).
The Pension Application says he was 77 years old in 1832.
.....Alicey Belcher, widow of Bartlett Belcher, private in the Virginia Line, was placed on the Jonesboro, TN pension roll at $33.33 per anum under the Act of 29 July 1848 from 08 April 1848. Certificate 436 was issued 07 December 1849

From left to right--Laura Baker (Maxey), Bedford Turner, Mary Dovie Belcher, Caroline Baker (Belcher) & George Belcher
Mary Dovie(Molly)Belcher was a small child when her father, McClellan(Clynn)Belcher was killed. He was killed during an argument in a poker game. Molly and her mother, Caroline Baker(Belcher) worked in a boardinghouse for miners in Stonega, Virginia to support themselves. Caroline took Molly out of school to help with the hard work. Mary ran away with a miner, Fred Smith, to get away from the hard work. They married and had four children. When the kids were very young, Fred Smith got killed; Molly thinks it was one of his friends, but couldn't prove it. Molly met another miner, Toney Lee Gibson, and they got married in 1927. Toney raised all of the Smith kids plus four of his own by Molly.
Fred Smith was killed not long after he and Mary Belcher married. She had
four small children to raise. Mary Married: Toney Lee Gibson a coal miner in 1927 and

Talking with Stokley Belcher - Hyden, Ky., June 24, 1898.
"My grandfather, Bailey (Bartley) Belcher was a soldier in the Revolutionary
War. He lived to be 84 years old and drew a pension til his death about
1845. He was born and raised in S.C. He was only 14 years old when he
enlisted. His father was drafted and he was sent as his substitute.
He
received a saber wound in his left arm, the scar of which he carried to
his grave. I remember him and remember the scar. After the war he
removed to Hawkins County, Tenn. where he married Alsie Lawson. She
survived him 4 years. She was 4 years his junior.
They had six children,
three boys, three girls.
6... Betsey Belcher, my mother is still alive,
lives on Straight Creek with her daughter, Martha Osborne.
My mother had ten children.
I was a soldier in the Rebel Army, so was my
brother, Milton.
My father was Col. David Rogers.
My mother had ten
children by him, then married him.
He made up a company for the Union
Army but before he was mustered in, the Rebels captured him and he died.
This was in Hawkins Co., Tenn., where we were all born and raised. My
brother, Orville Belcher, lives in Leslie County Ky. The Rogers were Irish and Belchers and Rogers are mixed with Tuchaho Dutch.
My father had 12 children by his first wife. He was beaten up by the
Rebels so that he died. He was a great fighter. He fought 52 fist
fights, was the bully of Tenn. He fought the Rebels, refusing to
surrender. He had a real Irish face with a tremendous voice. He was an
officer in the militia before the war. His first children were in the
Union Army.(End of Story)
