William Ramey Pike County Kentucky

WILLIAM RAMEY was issued a pass to settle in "Cherokee Country"
sometime between 1801 and 1804 by indian agent Jonathan Meigs.
Early in the 1800's a Jacob Remy descendant, William R. Remy and his wife Anna Samlins
settled near the present Elkhorn City on the Virginia-Kentucky line
in the present Pike County, Kentucky. He built a home near the mouth
of Elkhorn Creek; this build was the beginning of Elkhorn City.
William laid claim to large tracts of land containing coal, timber, oil and gas,
around Elkhorn City. He acquired thousands of acres of land through Land
Surveys secured by State Land Grants and by County Court Orders, he also bought
and traded for other land. At one time he owned all the land from the Forks
of the Russell and Levisa Rivers to the Headwaters of Grassy Creek in Virginia,
which included a good part of the Breaks region. Pike County Rameys of today state
that William owned more than 40,000 acres of land, but a fire in his home, or in the prove his ownership, other Individuals and large Companies claimed much of the land.
In 1858 owned 609 acres on Grassy Creek waters of Sandy River. June 3 1852 bought
84 acres on Grassy Creek, on a cliff. However, at his death in 1865 he left much
land to his children as is shown by his will found in Pike County Will Book on page 50
397 acres both sides of grassy creek. mentioned in 1857 land warrant.
William served as road commssioner, justice of the peace in the period of 1822-1834.
He was sheriff of Pike County 1831-1834 and justice of the peace again in 1837
Also served as a surveyor and laid claim to large tracts of land.
Showed up in court records ntil 1848. Book D-P 2171866 includes bonding of executor and appinting appraisers for his estate.
Many of Robert G. Scotts land deals involve William in 1816 Floyd County, before Pike County was formed from Floyd.

      William R. Ramey
      was born in 1782
in Fayette co Virginia(now in Clark County kentucky) and died in 1865 in
Pike County Ky. He is said to have married Anna Samlins who
was born in 1784 in south carolina according to the 1850 Pike County census.
and died 18 Nov. 1856 in Pike county
Anna was the daughter of Elizabeth Samlins, no other information is found on an: Anna Samlins :(some say she may have been Cherokee)William was born in Fayette County Virginia .
The Elkhorn city heritage society has on the marker that he came from North Carolina to Kentucky. Many States in that area were changing boundaries at the time. but he may have been there buying land. Note Here: Richard Potter the man who married Williams daughter Teeny was from North Carolina .

He died on 19 Dec 1886 in Buchanan Co, VA.
He is buried in Breaks Interstate Park, Va.
He owned all the lands that are currently in the Breaks Interstate Park.
According to family stories he was buried beneath the cedar tree that he frequented during his peroids of meditation. As the marker states he is not forgotten.
The following is written on a plaque over the headstone of Richard Potter in the
      Breaks Interstate Park:
      "February 14, 1792-1886"
Here lies Richard Potter who came to these mountains from North Carolina as a young man, farmer. distillery operator, Herb Doctor. He lived in the present service area with his first wife Teeny Ramey and his ten children, later with his second wife Polly Wallace (wallis). He owned a large section of land which included all of the Breaks Interstate Park. Many of his descendents still inhabit this area: His children settled and lived in the area known as the Potter Flats. A visiting 19th century writer after a visit to to the Potter clan published a book in which he wrote they were "molded with a gentle spirit". The tombstone was paid for by Mose Potter Jr, Babe Potter and Elihu Tackett. They hued timbers into cross ties, sold them and finished paying for the stone which was purchased from Richard's stepson Wallace for $48.00.

IN WILLIAMS WILL AN ISAAC RAMEY IS MENTIONED,
This Isaac, if under age 21 in 1864 when the will was written couldnt have been Anna's son. She died in 1856. Since he would have to have been born after 1856 or after.
William died in 1865 and the will was probated in 1866.
It would seem William had another child by another woman or Isaac is a nephew. The will reads "My Fathers last grandson"

Isaac could have been born by another woman after 1856. The wills states he is under twenty one and seems to indicate he wasnt very old. saying if he lives until he is 21.
