I pity the child who never attended a rural school. Simply because of smaller numbers of students, they were more like family than school. The child felt like he was part of something. By closing the small schools in favor of big, impersonal schools, where the child feels insignificant among such great numbers, society took away that part of childhood, which today it sorely lacks.
