The family of Johann and Fredericke Bischof Hintz settled in the area of Wauwatosa, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, shortly after their arrival in the United States in 1868. Johann and his children were born in Pomerania, in eastern Germany. You can
learn more about Pomerania's history by clicking here.In church records of his time, David Hintz, father of Johann, is listed as a "Fuhrmann", or coachman. The village of Woedtke was the ancestral home of the Hintz family, and several members of the Hintz family lived in the Woedtke area at the time of the birth of Johann Ferdinand Hintz in 1819. Woedtke centered around a beautiful manor house of the von Woedtke family. David Hintz was the son of Erdmann Hintz and Regina Louise Knoll.
A German friend wrote that he found, in a publication of 1936:

Ferdinand Johann (John) Hintz was born in Gumtow, Kreis Greifenberg, Pommern, Germany on June 22, 1866. He emigrated to the United States with his parents, Johann# and Fredericke Bischof Hintz, in 1868. He was the brother of Bertha Hintz (Heinrich Johann) Ziemer, Wilhelmine Hintz* (Valentin) Paul, and Pauline Hintz (Zorn?). Ferdinand Hintz arrived in the United States at Baltimore, Maryland, aboard the ship OCEAN from Bremen, on 08 June, 1868. At that time his father Johann was 49 years of age; his mother Fredericke (nee Bischof) was 44; his sister Bertha was 17; Pauline was 14; and Wilhelmine was 8. On 7 April, 1895, Ferdinand Hintz married Katharine Paul, daughter of Phillip Paul. They had several children, most of whom died within the first year of life. Wauwatosa City Directories of the 1920's list Ferdinand Hintz as a carpenter. Mr. Hintz died May 21, 1931 and is buried at Pinelawn Cemetery.
