Our Pommern Trip

April, 2000

Some views of Woedtke

Our two visits to our ancestral home of Woedtke, Kreis Greifenberg, Pommern (now Otok, Poland) were among the most touching of our April 1- 10, 2000 trip to Germany and the former Pomerania. During our first day in Woedtke, we were able to view the interior of the beautiful old church there and to visit with the pastor and with some children of the town. The following day, we returned to the churchyard to attempt (unsuccessfuly) to copy the portions of a WWI monument now taken apart and used as part of a Marien shrine. High school students led us to the 20th century cemetery just outside of town, where many robbed graves were obvious, apparently dug up by Soviet soldiers just ten years ago.

In these pictures, you will see my sister (in green) and me working to rub the inscribed rock. Also visible here is the door of the church at Woedtke and an inscription on the back wall of the church.

The interior shots of this church will be posted later (they are on the digital camera and I am not sure how to get them up, yet -- I need someone else's equipment!)
