Mrs. Bertha Ziemer, nee Hintz, was born in Germany, August 26, 1850. At the age of 17 years she came with her parents to America and found her home in the new world in the vicinity of Milwaukee.

Three of these children, Frank, Mrs. Minnie Giencke, and Clara preceded her in death, as well as her husband, who died November 2, 1907.

Since her marriage she was a member of the parish of this church, seeking the blessing and strength of her Lord in worship at Friedens Ev. Church, Butler and this church. She took an active part in the work of the church through the Ladies Aid at Friedens Church, of which she was a member as long as she was able.

She passed away at about 3:45 Wednesday afternoon July 23rd[1941] in her home in the town of Brookfield, where in her declining years she made her home with her daughter Louise. Notes for the Funeral Sermon for Bertha Ziemer

Reverend Wullschleger Presiding; July 26th, 1941

Trinity Church, Brookfield, Wisconsin

Phil. 1: 25

"But I am in strait betwixt the two, having the desire to depart and be with Christ, for it is very far better..."

Notes: The apostle's position: Work on earth to do, yet a desire and longing to be with the Lord. The departed expressed her desire to be with the Lord. These words of the apostle were her sentiments. It is natural for a Christian to have this desire.

The more we live in Christ, the greater our desire to be with Him.

Experience his love as earthly limitations will permit; it draws us to him. Wish to experience it in full measure. Learn to love him; want to be sure and in His presence at all times.

Desire to be in an atmosphere and spirit akin to His. Sought it on earth in worship and fellowship with Christians.

Hearts that lived in Christ long for the purity, truth and righteousness that surround him, the place where this may be in abundance, without limit.

When life's work is done, desire for reward. The Apostle still had work to do, yet the desire for reward and rest. When work has been faithfully accomplished one waits for reward and release from bonds of human weakness, frailties, dangers, and struggles.

When life is drawing to close and no longer has anything in store for us, we look for new life in eternity.

Far better with the Lord: Earthly life loses attraction when one knows the Lord and lives in communion with Him; one longs to be Home. In Christ we learn to know the better life; the Christian dies with a desire for its fulfillment.

Thanks to Richard Wullschleger for the copy of his father's sermon notes and the obituary copy.
