      "William Bartholomew wounded at Farmville, Virginia, April 6, 1865. A.W. Hoffman, Joseph Hoffman, Sylvester Ostmer, Joseph Spenser, John Spencer, M.B. Todd, M.W. Mitchner (died from wounds, September 3, 1864). William B. Henry (died from wounds received June 15, 1864 at Winchester, Virginia). J. L. Henry, W. Sheely, Samuel Carpenter, Wright McKibben, John Hillis, David Hillis, James Hillis, Wilson W. English, L. Gibson, Isaac Funk (killed July 18, 1864), Henry Ebersole (killed June 15, 1863 at Winchester, Virginia), John Funk, Isaac Seavault, John W. Rogers, John B. Shaffer, David Thompson (wounded June 15, 1863),S. S. Carson, Hugh M. Cory, John H. Carpenter and J.F. Schuyler, lieutenant. This company was discharged at Columbus, Ohio, June 15, 1865.
     Moses, John, Jeremiah, Peter and David Cassner were also members of said company. Quite a number of men served under Captain W. M. Miller in the O.N.G. Anson and Harvey Bartholomew, F.M. Seed, E. Crow, Joseph Harbaugh, Mr. Shade and W.B Olds were stationed on Johnson's Island (Sandusky Bay) guarding rebel prisoners.
Samuel Brown, J. Foster, John Huddleson, William Millon (killed in battle), Fred Thompson and John Thompson served in regiments whose numbers were not known. Many men from Venice also listed in other states."
     John, David and James Hillis moved to Michigan after the Civil War.  Other Civil War soldiers from Seneca Co., Ohio are mentioned in this book

David HILLIS
Company I, 123rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry
Enrolled Aug.22, 1862 at Attica, Ohio. Same tent as John H. Carpenter and Samuel b. Carpenter of Attica, Ohio.  Dec. 18th, 1862 was on forced march from New Creek, Virginia to Little Petersburg, West Virginia...up one hills and down another on bad roads. David had a rupture in his right groin from marching and carrying a heavy load. Spring of 1874, he moved to Ionia Co., Michigan . Lived in Portland, MI in 1922. Died 18 Sept. 1928.

James HILLIS
Company I, 123rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry
Was in New Creek, Virginia on 1 DEC 1862. Heavy exposure on march of three days through mountains from Beverley, Virginia to New Creek through rain, sleet and snow caused
Bronchitis and fever which  settled in his ears and caused deafness in one ear. There was six days of lying on the ground in snow six inches deep and no tent. James uses an artificial ear drum to hear out of other ear. He was sent from New Creek to Cumberland hospital and then to Clarysville Hospital. He left service 12 JUNE 1865. James resided in Ohio for three years and then moved to Saginaw Co., Oakley, MI. He died 23 AUG 1895

John HILLIS
Company I, 123rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry
complexion: dark, blue eyes, black hair
Born March 28, 1838 in Hancock Co., Virginia.
There was an explosion of a guncap and a flying peice hit him in the left eye during the Battle of Richmond, Hatcher's Run, Virginia, March 29, 1865.
He had no tent or blanket and constant duty and fatigue with no rest until Appomatox.
He was captured in action in Winchester, Virginia on 15 JUNE 1863. He was discharged 12 JUNE 1865. He lived in Vernon, Shiawassee County, Michigan.  John died 2 March 1919.

Zachary Taylor HILLIS
Company C, 164th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry
Died 1923 in Bear Creek, Emmet Co., MI. Buried Joy Cemetary.

OBITUARY OF DAVID HILLIS, son of John and Sarah (CUMMINS) HILLIS

Aged Veteran Of Civil War Answers Call.  David Hillis Passed Away Tuesday In Soldier's Home At Sandusky, Ohio
     Taps sounded Tuesday for David HILLIS, former well-known Portland resident and Civil War veteran, his death occuring at the Soldier's Home in Sandusky, Ohio. The remains were brought to Portland and funeral services held at the residence of Sam and Emma McElelland this (Thursday) afternoon, in charge of Rev. J.H. Stewart. Burial was made in the Portland cemetary.
     Mr. Hillis was born in New Cumberland, West Virginia, on December 12, 1840. when a small boy he went to Attica, Ohio, residing there until November 25, 1875, when he was united in marriage to Christiana Gambee. Soon after that event they came to Portland and settled on a farm three miles southeast of this village where they lived for 25 years. They then moved to town residing here until the death of Mrs, Hillis which occured in February 1924. A short time after the death of his wife Mr. Hillis went to Attica, Ohio to make his home with a sister and brother, Mrs. Ed Meyers and Lee Hillis. Several months ago he went to the Soldier's Home at Sandusky, remaining there until his death. Mr. Hillis was an uncle of John, James, Samuel and Miss Emma McClelland and Ed Hillis.
     He was a Civil War veteran and had the distinction of being in the last big battle of that conflict when he was taken prisoner by the Confederate forces on April 6th and forced to march with them until April 9th when General Lee surrendered his army to General Grant. With his death the ranks of the old John A. Megarah Post, G.A.R. is deleted to two members. They are Philo N. Chapel of Portland and Comrad Hanchett of Sheridan, a former Portland resident. Mr. Chaple is 80 years of age and Mr. Hanchett 96.
     The remains of Mr. Hillis were accompanied to Portland by his brother, Lee Hillis.
