Joseph Finley HILLIS owned a Farm in Norwich twp., Huron Co.,OH.    
     Joseph Finley HILLIS was born 20 JUNE 1831 in Hickory, Mount Pleasant twp., Washington Co., PA. His parents were John and Sarah (CUMMINS) HILLIS. He married Catharine Josephine SHRENK on 14 NOV 1861 in Seneca Co., OH. Josephine was born 15 JAN 1841 in Bucyrus, Crawford Co., OH to John and Jane (FALOON) SHRENK. Finley died 18 SEPT 1899 in Norwich twp., Huron co., OH. Josephine died 11 MAR 1927 in Norwich twp., Huron Co., OH.  Both of them are buried in the Bethel Church of God Cemetary.                
Josephine and Finley had eight children:
(1)John Ellsworth (El) born 25 JAN 1863 in Attica, Seneca Co.,OH. He married Elena Ann THOMPSON of Union twp., Van Wert County, Ohio on 02 NOV 1895 in Van Wert, Ohio. they went to Louisiana via Des Arc and Cottonplant, Arkansas where John worked as a teacher and owned a sawmill. They lived in Crew Lake, Richland Parish, Louisiana and Lottie, Point Coupee Parish, LA. They had two children. Effie Blanche and Vernie. John died 22 JULY 1939 in Lottie, LA and is buried in Cottonwood Cemetary.
(2)Martin Andrew (Mart) was born 2 MAR 1865 in Attica, Seneca Co., OH. He never married. He died 1 FEB 1942 in Huron Co., OH. He is buried in Bethel Church of God Cemetary.
(3)William Delbert (Bert) was born 24 APRIL 1868 in Norwich twp., Huron Co., OH. His first wife was Kitty POLLINGER. Then he married Mame DAWSON on 16 MAR 1904 in Huron Co., OH. His third wife was Elizabeth (LIZZIE) KLARR.
Bert died 21 JUNE 1952 in Huron Co., OH. Bert is buried in the Bethel Church of God Cemetary.
(4)Emma Elizabeth was born 26 AUG 1869 in Norwich twp., Huron Co., OH. She died 13 APR 1883 at age 13 in Huron Co., OH.
(5)Harrison (Harry) Benson was born 10 NOV 1871 in Huron Co., OH. He married Emma E. in 1904. He died 6 JULY 1941 in Huron Co., OH. Harry and Emma had two children, Coy and Evelyn. Harry is buried in the Bethel Church of God Cemetary.
(6)Maggie was born 10 MAY 1874 in Huron Co., OH. She died 7 JUNE 1874.
(7)*Catharine Blanche (Blanche) was born 28 JULY 1876 in Huron Co., OH. She married *Oscar Scott BEEBE on 23 MAY 1897 in Huron Co., OH. They had five children, Hazel, Dale, Harry, Earl and Walter. Blanche died 29 MAY 1956 in Huron Co., OH. She is buried in Willard, Ohio.

Willard, Ohio May 31
Mrs. Catherine Blanche Beebe, 79, a resident of Norwich twp,
died late Tuesday in Municipal Hospital after an illness
of several weeks. She was born
July 28, 1876 in Norwich twp. and spent her life there.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Ora Green, Willard;
four sons, Dale, Monroeville, and Earl, Harry and Walter, all rural Willard;
13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Her husband, Oscar, preceded her in death 28 years ago.
Friends may call at the Fink Funeral Home,
where services will be held at 2 pm Friday, the Rev. G. C. Heffelfinger, officiating.
Burial is to be in Willard Cemetery.

(8)Glenn was born 10 FEB 1887 in Huron Co., OH. He died 8 JULY 1887 in Huron Co., OH.
    In 1860, before she was married, Josephine (SHRENK) HILLIS and her sister, Elizabeth lived with their Aunt Sarah (FALOON) MCKIBBON in Reed twp., Seneca Co., OH where they were both teachers.  According to family stories, she was also a substitute teacher at Four Points school outside Willard, Ohio and a midwife in the area when needed. Her father, John
Shrenk was publisher of the Bucyrus Democrat in Bucyrus, Ohio and other area Whig newspapers. Her husband, Finley was a farmer as were all of their sons. They attended the Bethel Church of God after they moved from Seneca Co., to Norwich twp., Huron Co., Ohio about 1867. Their daughter Blanche played organ at this church.

GENEALOGY HELP?

BETHEL CHURCH OF GOD
     In History of Huron and Erie Counties, Ohio, p.293, (year?)there is a brief description of this church. "The Church of God ( in Huron Co., Ohio ) was organized by Rev. William Shafer in about 1855. Constituent members members: Abram Pollinger and wife, James Shinaberger and wife, Leonard Allaman and wife, Christian Fetterhoof and wife, Sarah Pollinger, and Mrs. Elizabeth Brandt. Meetings were held in the school house in district number five until the erection of the Bethel in 1860. This building is located on lot number eighteen in the third section. It was built by subscription and is open to all religious denominations. The membership of the Church of God is thirty.
Officers: Abram Pollinger, elder; Joseph Wolf and  Lewis Rapp, deacons. The ministers who have presided over that church, are R.H. Bolton, John Senseneg, John L. Jenner, Martin Mowen, D. S. Warner, Jacob Aukerman, J. S. McKee, George Wilson, W.H. Oliver and William Burchard."

    The "Union Bethel church of God" was closed in 1972 and burned down about 1990. The cemetary remains. Is there additional information in newspaper articles or postcards concerning this church? Was the church mentioned in any area newspapers when it burned down about 1990?  Are there any existing records for the church at the Church of God District  headquarters in Findlay, Ohio? The last pastor beofre the church was sold was Harold Ferguson.
