FAMILY STORY passed down to Nora (GREEN) LEININGER's family:

Nora Ann GREEN was born 18 MAY 1869 in Dover twp., Fulton Co., Ohio. She was about 2 1/2 years old when her mother, Mary Anna SHELDON died about 1872. Mary Anna was born in Rhode Island. She was from a Quaker family and never owned a hat, only a bonnet. When Mary Anna died, one of the relatives in the Sheldon family in Rhode Island came by train and rode to the GREEN farm on horseback (rented horse from a stable in town). Nora said he had a long coat and black cape and a stovepipe black hat. He was wealthy and wanted to take baby Nora back with him and raise her with their family. Nora was afraid and cried and Ella, her sister, told him she was going to care for Nora until she was grown up. Then he smiled and said, "take good care of the baby and if you need anything, don't hesitate to let us know." He said the family loved Mary Ann (Nora's mother) and wanted to help with the baby who was left without a mother. The other children were older and thought they could make out. They kept in touch with Ella until she died. Nora lived with Ella until she was 16 years old. Nora started working at the age of 9 doing things for people and receiving pay for chores and cleaning while she lived with Ella. Nora and a girl friend went to Hillsdale College and got a job as maids. Then they decided to go to Wauseon, Ohio and they worked as maids in the Eager Hotel. The girls went on a blind date, that is when she became acquainted with Frederick B. Leininger and married. She was age 17 years. They lived on a farm 3 miles south of Pettisville, Ohio. He sold the Leininger farm in 1899 and moved into Wauseon and lived in town. He took up the Masonry trade. Then moved to Toledo and started out on his own, became a contractor in mason work. After the girls were married and gone, they bought a house in Florida and spent the winters there. After Nora died he remarried. When he married the 2nd wife, they sold the Toledo property and lived in Florida.
