Some notes and puzzles:

1.  Herbert Temple.  Disappeared around 1919 or 1920. Family 'legend' says that he went to New Zealand, but I have not found any record of him there. Nor have I found any re-marriage or death records for him in Australia. His eldest daughter, Marion's mother, said that as a child she watched and waited for her father to return and collect her.....but he never did! She was six years old when he left. She believed that he had gone away with a woman named 'Katie' or 'Katharine'.

2.   Occupations of the Temples.
The earlier Temples were in the clothing industry. Henry's occupation is listed as 'Mule Spinner- woollen' and John was a 'hand-loom weaver - woollen' and later, on his son's birth certificate was described as 'clothier'.

John's son, Thomas went into the coal mines. At age 12, the 1851 census lists his occupation as 'coal miner's hurrier'. At age 22, he is listed as 'coal-miner' His marriage certificate states simply 'miner'. His son's death certificate says he was a 'mine manager'

John William migrated to Australia because he did not want to follow in his father's footsteps and go into the coal mines. In Australia, he realised his ambition to be a farmer. He farmed at Carrum Downs, now an outer suburb of Melbourne. His other occupation was 'engine driver' - in the mining industry.  He was working as an 'engine driver'in a Melbourne factory when he was killed in an industrial accident.

3.  The name "Temple"
When I began researching the Temples, I was told by another 'Temple' researcher that the name is a particularly difficult one to follow back very far. He said most 'Temple' trails lead to London where it was a common practice to leave unwanted babies on the steps of the Temple Church.  The priests took them in and baptised them all with the surname 'Temple', They often also gave them the same first name, using the favourite name of the incumbent priest of the time. An impossible puzzle to unravel.

So far, I have not traced this Temple family back to London. One family 'legend' says that the family came from France and the original name was 'Du Temple'. How do you prove or disprove any family legends?
