123. William SPENCER8 was born about 1652. He died in Jan 1712 or Feb 1712/13. If son of Michael, which is doubtful, was probably born as early as 1652, and might have been several years younger. A will purporting to be his will, was refused at probate. Inventory was taken Feb 16, 1712/3 by Daniel Brainard, James Ackly and Jabez Chapman amounted to Pounds 112:13:06. Admission was granted to Sarah Spencer who exhibited account of her administration Dec 6, 1714. He married Sarah Ackley, daughter of Nicholas, who was living in Colchester in 1721. He seems to have been a school teacher, and was Town Clerk of East Haddam, pages 1 to 65 of 1st book of Town Records are in his handwriting. He first appears in Saybrook Ct, Jan 13 1685/6, when he bought a right there from James Harris. On Feb 9, 1732/3, William Spencer of Colchester, son of William Spencer, formerly of Saybrrok, late of Haddam, deceased, sold a 24 Pound right in Saybrook, "which did belong to my Honorable Father" (Saybrook Deeds, 1:169: 4:486.) William bought land in Haddam, Feb 4, 1703/4, from John Chapman, part of the consideration being that he should teach the three sons of Chapman to "write and sipher as far as is needful and useful". By 1728, the family had removed to the Westchester Parish of Colchester and by 1740 to Sharon where they were among the first settlers. He is called "Junior" in the East Haddam records.
