QUACKENBUSH.
By some members of the family the name is supposed to have been derived from the dutch words “Quacken,” to croak (like a frog) and “Boss,” a bush or “Quackel,” a quail, and Bosch, a forest.
The name first appears on the Beverwyck and the New Amsterdam records, spelled Quackenbos and, sometimes Quack. bosh or bosch, but the Albany branches of the family generally spell the name Quackenbush.

Pieter Quackenbos came from “Oestgeest,” in Holland. He was in Beverwyck (Albany), before 1888, and in New Amsterdam (New York) at an earlier period. The name of his wife was Martje ~, they had

Johannes Quackenbos resided in Niskayuna near Albany. He with his brother Reyner (or Reinier, or Reyer as he was sometimes called), owned farms on the north side of the Mohawk River in the present town of Clifton Park, which were extended north one mile by patent April 22, 1708.

This statement has been found to be erroneous. Wouter Quackenbush married Nelletje Guysbertie but what her surname was has not been ascertained

Margaret Oothout, wife of Colonel Hendrick (or Henry) Quackenbush died May 19,1770. He married, 2d. Elizabeth,in 1776, by whom be had no children.
Colonel Quackenbush died February 4, 1813.
Colonel Quackenbush was a provincial officer in the British Army under Lords Amherst and Abercrombie during the French war He was engaged in the attack on Crown Point and Ticonderoga. He was in the same mess with Lord Howe and was very near him when he was shot in the forest by the Indians. Colonel Quackenbush was Chairman of the Albany Committee of Safety in the revolutionary war. He was wounded when in command of his regiment in the last attack of the American troops led by General Arnold against the British army at Saratoga, and he commanded the guard of two hundred men who brought General Burgoyne to Albany, after the last battle, where he, General Burgoyne was confined in the house of General Schuyler in the south part of the city. The house now, 1882, occupied by the Tracy family.
Colonel Quackenbush received an autograph letter from General Burgoyne, thanking him for kindness and attention shown the latter while a prisoner under his charge.
