In 1884, the handsome Captain James Gibson aged 36, brought his new bride, the beautiful Miss Margaret Butchart, age 30, on a brave new journey from Scotland to a new world, a new home, a new experience. Shortly after their marriage that took place on April 10, 1883 in the small Free Church of Scotland on Barry Road, in Carnoustie, Scotland Margaret discovered that she was pregnant with their first child, which they named Julia Bettina Agala Gibson. Julia was born February 22, 1884. Although born on the high seas aboard the ship that brought them to the United States, her record show her birth place as Scotland, as the ship’s last port was Scotland and they had not reached the Americas yet The young couple settled in Minden Township, Haliburton, Ontario after immigrating to Canada in 1884, according to the 1901 census, and continued to raise their family, before moving north to Harris Township in Timiskaming.
In 1904 Julia Gibson married Tholby Burk in Minden, Haliburton and moved to Temiskaming District, Harris Township in 1907 where they raised their family. The story of this fascinating family spanning 11 generations is revealed on these pages.
