From Jeff Green [minor edits]: From what I've found is, a large number of people could not write and the
term "make your mark" was a generalization. It meant that you were
to make a mark by your own hand, whether legible or not, and in the presence
of witnesses. Those who could sign, did so, and those who couldn't, (became
doctors and wrote prescriptions. lol) they just
made their familiar mark. On the bottom of the page there is a remark " * Autograph" which means the individuals with an asterisk next to their name, signed their name. Henry has an asterisk next to his name. Update to discuss with Jeff - 1657 Alderman will - four witnesses and signor of will - but H's name is the only one that mentions a "marke" |
||
What does "freeman" mean? (May 1678 entry above) From Jeff Green [minor edits]: "The prerequisites for freemanship were not
always the same. In some clerical companies the more prominent of the
settlers were freeman by virtue of the fact of having made significant
financial contributions to the company. Others were very stringent in their
requirements, emphasizing consistent demonstration of Puritan virtues, a
declaration of faith, and Church membership. Joining a Congregational church
in the first generation was not an easy thing to do. After 1635, a candidate
had to stand before a highly skeptical group of elders and satisfy them in
three respects: adherence to Calvinist doctrines, achievement of a godly
life, and demonstrable experience of spiritual conversion." http://www.dowdgen.com/dowd/document/henry.html |

Dates
Dates are entered as found and may be subject to revision as some original records are not available and subject to error during records transcription. Double year dating is in use where applicable.
Some dates in the "Essex" entries (see Sources below) are from the date at the top of the publication's page and may differ from the dates in the material.
Robertson states: "The dates until the 3rd of Sept. 1752 in the old
cemeteries and other records are old style dates and eleven days must be added
to bring into new style. Also, the year 1656-7, for example, means the
ecclesiastical year 1656 and the civil year 1657. The ecclesiastical year began
on the 25th day of March - - the civil year on the first of January. Hence this
double way of writing the year is found in January, February and March to the
24th." Robertson 1947, p. 2
