Henry Kenny Brought to Court For Slandering
Reverend James Bailey (1679): Abstract of Depositions
Complaint of Thomas Putnam Senior, John Putnam Senior, Daniel Andrew
and Nathaniel Ingersoll: that Henery Keeny (Kenny) had greatly slandered their
minister, Mr. Bayeley, by reporting that he neglected family duties (i.e., family
prayers), at several places, i.e., to John Collins, to the wife of Nathaniel
Ingersoll, to the wife of Jonathan Knight, to Edw. Putnam, and to the wife of
Joseph Holtone, Senior.

Warrant, dated April 4, 1679, for the appearance of Henry Kenny, for
slandering Mr. Baily, minister, by reporting that he did not perform family
duties. Also summonses the wife of Nathanile Ingersoll, the wife of Jonathan
Knight, Edward Putnam, and the wife of Joseph Holton, as witnesses.

Ann King, aged about 50 years, deposed that being at Mr. Baly's house for
three weeks together, she never heard him read a chapter, not expound any part
of the Scripture, which was a great grief to her.

Edward Putnam, aged about 23 years, deposed that he heard Kenny make the
charges. The wife of Nathaniel Ingersoll and the wife of Joseph Holton testified
the same.

James Smith, Frances Geferd, John Shepard and Mary Woodrow deposed that
they had lived in Mr. Bayly's family at different times, and he always performed
family duties, morning and evening, unless sickness or some other unavoidable
providence prevented.

Died
Jeff Green states ". . . Henry Keney, Sr. died between the spring of 1709 and March 1, 1709/10." Green's logic/evidence will be added here soon.

Details to be added

Does anyone have below mentioned vital records data? Copy of, or info about, the deed?
(Jeff Green thinks the mystery date of June 19, 1696 might be the death date of Henry's first wife Anne.)
"He is probably the same Henry Kinne who d. June 19, 1696 in Newbury, Mass. (v.r.). A quit-claim deed from his youngest son, Henry to his oldest son, John, dated June 6, 1712, refers to him as deceased, hence same records give 1712 as the possible year of his death. . . ."

Robertson 1947, p. 1
(From Bopp)

"In a deed given by Henry Kinne the name is spelled six different ways in the same document."
Does anyone have info about this deed? (Maybe it's a Henry, Jr. deed.)

Robertson 1947, p. 1
(From Bopp)

"In Salem vital records, his name appears twice as Kenney"
Which records? Kene and Keny appear in Salem Vital Records on CD-ROM data according to Bullock.

Robertson 1947, p. 1
(From Bopp)

". . . and in various forms in other Salem records and the documents of Boston State House, but usually as Kinne or Kinney."
Usually? Not based on above list -(no sign of KINNEY in our above list).
Maybe this refers to later generations.

Robertson 1947, p. 1
(From Bopp)

Henry - "The name appears in early colonial records under various spellings as Keny, Kene, Kinne, Keyney, Kenney, Kennee, Kine, Kenne, etc."
These are yet not reported in our above list: Kennee, Kine, Kenne
Maybe these are in later generations.

Robertson 1947, p. 1
(From Bopp)

Salem Village (17 miles north of Boston)

In the late 1630's, Salem Village (now known as Danvers or Danvers Highlands) was established by a group of farmers who moved five miles from Salem town. In 1752 Danvers became a township separate from Salem.

Could Henry write his name?

From Jeff Green [minor edits]:
Regarding the terminology "mark":

From what I've found is, a large number of people could not write and the term "make your mark" was a generalization. It meant that you were to make a mark by your own hand, whether legible or not, and in the presence of witnesses. Those who could sign, did so, and those who couldn't, (became doctors and wrote prescriptions. lol) they just made their familiar mark.

See "Quarterly Courts of Essex County Massachusetts"
Volume 4 page 98 for the year 1669
http://etext.lib.virginia.edu/salem/witchcraft/Essex/vol4/images/essex098.html

On the bottom of the page there is a remark " * Autograph" which means the individuals with an asterisk next to their name, signed their name. Henry has an asterisk next to his name.

Update to discuss with Jeff - 1657 Alderman will - four witnesses and signor of will - but H's name is the only one that mentions a "marke"

What does "freeman" mean? (May 1678 entry above)

From Jeff Green [minor edits]:

"The prerequisites for freemanship were not always the same. In some clerical companies the more prominent of the settlers were freeman by virtue of the fact of having made significant financial contributions to the company. Others were very stringent in their requirements, emphasizing consistent demonstration of Puritan virtues, a declaration of faith, and Church membership. Joining a Congregational church in the first generation was not an easy thing to do. After 1635, a candidate had to stand before a highly skeptical group of elders and satisfy them in three respects: adherence to Calvinist doctrines, achievement of a godly life, and demonstrable experience of spiritual conversion." http://www.dowdgen.com/dowd/document/henry.html

Dates

Dates are entered as found and may be subject to revision as some original records are not available and subject to error during records transcription. Double year dating is in use where applicable.

Some dates in the "Essex" entries (see Sources below) are from the date at the top of the publication's page and may differ from the dates in the material.

Robertson states: "The dates until the 3rd of Sept. 1752 in the old cemeteries and other records are old style dates and eleven days must be added to bring into new style. Also, the year 1656-7, for example, means the ecclesiastical year 1656 and the civil year 1657. The ecclesiastical year began on the 25th day of March - - the civil year on the first of January. Hence this double way of writing the year is found in January, February and March to the 24th." Robertson 1947, p. 2
