Was born in Butler county, Ohio, in the year 1826, and came with his parents to Illinois in 1835. He remained at
home on the farm until he was eighteen years old, when he taught school for several terms. Becoming tired of that
business, he engaged in selling goods for Dr. Landrum, in Washington, at which he continued until 1859, when his
health became so poor that he could not endure close confinement, and since that time he has been living on the
farm with his mother.
Mrs. Chamberlain, Alfred's mother (whose maiden name was Bryant), was born in Hamilton county, Ohio, in 1805. She
has always enjoyed good health, and is a very intelligent woman, well posted on the affairs of the county. She
has in her possession a Bible that belonged to Aaron Chamberlain, Alfred's grandfather, which bears date 1702,
and which she reads very often. It is perhaps the oldest Bible in Pike county.
Alfred and his mother are living very comfortably on a part of the old homestead, on section 24, where Aaron Chamberlain,
his father, first settled, in 1835. At the earnest solicitation of his friends, Alfred has held many of the local
offices of Derry township, and always rendered satisfaction to all parties.
