J. M. DUFFIELD

Is the son of James Duffield, who was born in South Carolina in the year 1796, and at the age of twelve years he moved with his parents to Tennessee, where he remained until 1812. He then served for six months as a substitute in the war of 1812, when he was honorably discharged; but in a short time thereafter he again went into the service as a substitute, and served another six months, and was again honorably discharged. He remained out of the service but a few weeks, when there was another call for men. He then volunteered for himself, served through the war, and received his third honorable discharge. He then returned to Tennessee, and in 1818 was married to Miss Kate Worley. In 1819 they removed to Indiana, and there remained until 1847, when they came to Illinois and settled on section 10, in Martinsburg township, Pike county, where they now live.

J. M. Duffield was the third child and oldest son of his father's family. He was born in Indiana in 1825, and remained with his parents until 1852, when he married Miss Lucinda Petty, and in the same year purchased the north-east quarter of section 10, in Martinsburg township, where he settled and still resides.

Mr. Duffield commenced his course in life as a common laborer, and worked for eight to ten dollars per month until he was able to do better, and that was not until he got to farming and raising stock for himself. He is now one of the enterprising farmers and heavy property holders of Pike county. He is the father of four children, three sons and one daughter, all of whom are at home and enjoying the comforts of life with their parents.
