Luppitt Church Records, ..................` Preamble laying out the conditions and terms under which tithes are set, and under which the petition by Robert Rogers and others is being heard . We have viewed an Extract of a letter ................ Questions put to witnesses .............depositions made by witnesses at Honiton 14th April 1591, namely John Hame , of Luppitt , husbandman, aged upward of 80 yrs, William Miller of Luppitt, miller, aged 47, Tenall Forward of Luppitt, husbandman aged 72, Elizabeth Forward of Luppitt aged upward of 70 yrs, Joane Rogers of Otterton , widow , of the age of 90yrs or thereabouts, William Shapston of Luppitt husbandman, aged 78yrs or thereabouts, John Deeme of Luppitt butcher, aged 65, Thomas Broome of Luppitt, husbandman, aged 80yrs or thereabouts, Richard Holwill of Luppitt, husbandman aged upwards of 60yrs, Richard Cox of Luppitt, yeoman aged upward of 60yrs, Andrew Shapton of Luppitt husbandman aged 70 years or thereabouts , Humphrey Lambert of Luppitt , husbandman aged 80yrs or thereabouts ........

We have looked into a certain petition exhibited at our Court of Chancery by Robert Rogers and other complainants, against Walter Knott clerk defendant ..........to the Rt Hon Sir Christopher Hatton Lord Chancellor of England .......in most humblewise sheweth and complaineth unto your good Lordship your daily orator Robert Rogers of Luppitt husbandman as well for himself as for other the parishioners of Luppitt aforesaid .........that your said Orator being seized in his demeans as of freehold for term of his life by copy of corut Rolls ..........in one grist mill and seven acres of land , meadow and pasture to the said mill belonging for which the said Orator and the terretenants thereof by the space of 40 yrs next before the said act did not pay for the tithe of the said mill other than 1s 6d yearly in full recompense and discharge of all the tithes thereof ............................

Joane Rogers of Otterton confirms that she knew the parties and the parish of Luppitt for 52 years and upward ..........the tythe of the mill was 18d per year and she knew this to be true because her first husband John Miller about 52 yrs previously took the same mill of Sir George Carew for the term of his life, and then of this deponent ...........and after the death of her husband about 30yrs previously she continued to pay the tithe of 18d per annum until she sold her right thereof to Richard Perryon decd
