Homepage for AMES

This is my way of remembering my Dad Arthur Ames, who died in 1959. He left behind eight young children who have always asked what was he like where did he come from?

Over the past few years I have discovered quite a few things about him. One being that he was a very good pianist and also a boxer. Some time in the 1940s he first married , had a child called Terry/Terrence Ames Unfortunately this little boy developed a high fever whilst in his maternal grandmothers care and died soon after from Peritonitis. The grandmother beside herself with grief and self blame hung herself. Needless to say my father and his first wife split up, she went to the USA and my father started to play the piano in pubs and clubs and met my mother. I do know that he had a very important audition on the Carol Levis Show back in the early 50s and was so nervous he went for a drink to calm his nerves and drank so much he was unable to play..It has been said that he wrote the music for Smoke Gets In Your Eyes and sold it for the price of a pint to a Yank in a pub back in the early 50s how true this is I do not know!

If you feel you have met my father at some stage during his 48 years and you might have a story to tell me or a picture to share please dont hesitate to contact me. Naturally if youre a cousin your very welcome to email me. Whatever information I have in regards to my family tree I am willing to share. Theres not much yet, Im only a beginner. Very little is known about his ancestors except from about 1711 to this day they could be found around Warwickshire Nuneaton Worcestershire Previously to 1711 the Ames branch can be found in Norwich Norfolk.
