KELLY

From Slieve
(Annaghmore West)

Moylough Parish

County Galway, Ireland

BRIDGET KELLY was born in 1830 in Slieve (Annaghmore West) in the Parish of Moylough, County Galway. We are still seeking information about her family. Bridget emigrated to Canada in 1852 (According to the Census of 1901). When and where she married Patrick Glynn is still not known. She died in 1907 in Niagara Falls, Canada and is buried in Fairview Cemetery there. We are aware of two of her brothers: PATRICK (1838-1902) and MICHAEL (1827-1894).

We have not yet fully explored the "Kelly" connection. The following information represents the recollection of Margaret Scherer Moore as recorded by her son, Tom. Margaret is the daughter of Bridget Kelly Scherer and the granddaughter of Michael and Margaret "Pexie" Kelly of Annaghmore West, Moylough, County Galway.

We are aware of three Kelly children:
MICHAEL(1827-1894)
BRIDGET (1830-1907)
PATRICK (1838-1902)

MICHAEL KELLY (b.1827 Moylough) married to Margaret Higgins. They had 7 children: Patrick, Michael, John, Mary, Bridget, Catherine, Edward. Michael Kelly died in 1894. Of his children, sons Patrick and Michael and daughter, Bridget, came to the "New World".
PATRICK
Was an Ontario Provincial Policeman. He married Elizabeth Matthews. They had 4 children: Margaret, Gertrude, Mary (Mayme), and John (who died in a flu epidemic).
MICHAEL
married Martha (?) and lived in Niagara Falls, NY. He was injured at work in a paper plant and died in the Forest Avenue Hospital in Buffalo. Michael and Martha had 2 daughters: Geraldine and Margaret.
JOHN
died in Ireland at an early age.
MARY
married a man named "Dolley". They had 4 children - all of whom came to the United States: Marie, Bridget (Della), Michael (?), and Catherine.
BRIDGET(b.6 Jan 1863 in Moylough)
. At age 17 (1880) she came to Queenston, ON. Her passage was paid for by her Uncle, Patrick Kelly, and her Aunt, "Auntie Glynn" Bridget Kelly Glynn. She moved to Niagara Falls, NY and later journeyed to NY City in search of work. She gained a position as a cook for the Davidson Family.(Mrs.Dorothy Davidson was the daughter of the Storm family which owned "White Owl Cigars".) In the winter the Davidsons and their household traveled to Florida to "winter" at the Storm Estate there. Bridget met and fell in love with Herman Scherer who was a "coachman" for the Storm family. They were married 19 May 1894 in Quincy, Florida by a Benedictine priest who used to say Mass once a month in the small town. When summer came, Bridget returned to New York City with the Davidson family. When she returned, she took the opportunity to visit her relatives in the Niagara Falls area. Some time afterwards, Herman came north to Niagara Falls. After a while Herman was able to get a job with the New York Central. He worked for the "Central" for over forty years and retired in 1938. Bridget and Herman had 3 children: Margaret, Edward, and Dorothy. Margaret married William N. Moore in 1932. They had 5 children: James, Thomas, Mary, Richard, and Ann. Edward married Helen Bourque. They had 4 children: Margaret Ann, Edward, Joseph, and Mary Ellen. Dorothy joined the Sisters of St.Joseph in Buffalo, her relgious name - Sister M. Clementine.
CATHERINE
remained in Ireland and married. She died in childbirth with her first born.
EDWARD
stayed in Moylough and took over the farm. He was married and had 5 children. His wife died after the birth of the fifth child and Edward's mother, Margaret "Pexie" Higgins Kelly, reared the 5 children. Two of the children came over to New York City: Mary and Margaret. The names of the 3 children who remained in Ireland was not remembered.

BRIDGET KELLY - (b.1830)- Information about Bridget is found on the GLYNN FAMILY page.

PATRICK KELLY was born in 1838 in Moylough Parish, County Galway. He married Ellen S. Donnelly (also of Moylough) and they emigrated to Canada settling in Queenston, Ontario. There they operated a boarding house for workers building the Welland Canal. They later moved to Niagara Falls, NY. They had one son, Patrick, who married Ellen Dooley and lived in Buffalo, NY.
PATRICK KELLY and his wife, Ellen S. Donnelly, were both born in Moylough, County Galway, Ireland. Patrick in 1838 and Ellen in 1842. Patrick was a brother of Bridget Kelly Glynn. According to family "tradition", another brother, Michael, remained in Galway to tend to the family farm. Michael was married to Margaret "Pexie" Higgins. However, it appears that some of Michael's children also emigrated - many eventually winding up in the Niagara Falls area. His daughter, Bridget, had her passage paid for by Uncle Patrick Kelly and "Auntie Glynn" Bridget Kelly Glynn. After staying a while in the Niagara Falls area, Bridget went to New York City in search of work. She secured a position as a cook with the Davidson family (Mrs.Davidson was the daughter of the Storm family who owned "White Owl" Cigars). In the Winter, the Davidsons traveled to Florida to "winter" at the Storm Estate. When in Florida Bridget met Herman Scherer, "coachman" for the Storm family. The two fell in love and were married in Quincy, Florida in 1894. When Spring returned, Bridget came back to NY with the Davidson family. She took the opportunity to visit her "family" in Niagara Falls. Herman left Florida and joined her there. Eventually he secured a job with the Railroad (New York Central) and worked until his retirement - over forty years. Bridget and Herman Scherer are buried in the "KELLY" plot at Fairview Cemetery, Niagara Falls, Canada. (Section C, Lot 24). The six burials in the Lot are:

Patrick Kelly

Ellen S. Donnelly Kelly

Bridget Kelly Scherer

Herman Scherer

Margaret Scherer Moore
