BOHANNAN/BOHANNON/BOHANON GENEALOGY
Compiled by Glenn Gohr

I learned of my connection to the Bohannans after studying the early history of the Neville family in the United States. There are a number of branches of Bohannans/Bohannons in the U.S., and I believe many of them are descended from Dunkin Bohannan, my ancestor, who married Cecily Collmore.

Also of interest, is that quite a number of Bohannons settled near Conway, Laclede County, Missouri, where my wife's family lives. One of the pastors of First Baptist Church in Conway (where my in-laws attend church) for many years was Elvin Bohannon. I also have worked with Joyce Bohannon (Elvin's wife) for several years in conjunction with H. & R. Block. In fact, Joyce was the teacher of the tax class I took several years ago with H. & R. Block. My wife also graduated from Conway High School with their son, John Bohannon, in 1977.

Another point of interest is that a number of Bohannons also settled in Madison County, Arkansas and intermarried with Callicos, Ledbetters, and other families connected to my wife's relatives who settled there. I'd like to find a definite connection with these Missouri and Arkansas Bohannons, but as yet, that connection eludes me.

Here in Springfield, Missouri, where I live is a Mrs. Peggy BOHANON, who is a member of the Assemblies of God. She has a wonderful web page devoted to families and to Christianity and the Pentecostal movement. It is called Peggys Place. It is worth visiting, although she doesnt mention anything about genealogy. She is a dear lady.

Because of my research on the Bohannan family, in February of 1997 I started a Bohannon E-Mail List sponsored with Indiana University and later through Rootsweb. Because of other commitments, I turned this list over to Elizabeth Veserat. This list really took off with lots of Bohannon researchers coming together to share ideas and information. Later that year I also became the founding president of the Neville Heritage Society which publishes the Neville Heritage Review and has a very active presence on the World Wide Web and other places as far as genealogy research on the Neville family in North America and abroad. The Nevilles and Bohannons intermarried twice in my lineage, and there are quite a few Neville researchers who are also tracing and working on the Bohannon line.

Here is my BOHANNAN lineage here in the U.S. which includes a double lineage as two Nevilles married two Bohannans:

  1. Dunkin BOHANNAN, Sr., b. ca. 1637 Scotland, d. aft. 1678 Gloucester Co., VA; md. 5 July 1658 at St. Michael's, Barbados to Cecily COLLMORE

If you type in BOHANNON you would probably get all the previous postings to the list. You can also type in a person's name instead or a locality to narrow your search. If you wish to do a search by date, try entering it in quotation marks with the day and then the month as "01 Mar" using single digit dates preceded by a zero and only the first three letter of the month.

font color="red">***Note***During the Fall of 1998, GenForum combined with Family Tree Maker, which means that all queries and information posted to that site becomes the property of Family Tree Maker. This is still a good site to look up information and get contact names for the BOHANNAN/BOHANNON/BOHANON lines you are searching, but be advised that if you now post a new query or a response to something on that site, chances are that sometime in the future Family Tree Maker will include that information on a CD-ROM which they will sell for profit to anyone who is interested. I do not like the idea of someone else using my hard researched information and ideas and selling them for a profit without my knowledge. This same practice is evident on all of the Family Tree Maker pages which are found on the internet, if you will read the disclaimer notices on those pages. I recommend the Family Tree Maker pages as good look up pages, but I don't recommend posting information there. Similar things can be said for Ancestry.com and MyFamily.com which are connected to each other and seek to make a profit from genealogical materials on the internet.
