CATE/CATES/KATES GENEALOGY
Compiled by Glenn Gohr

I learned about my Cate family through my study of the PYRON family. John Cate, Jr. left a will in Caswell County, North Carolina in 1785 where he names his grandson, Joshua PYRON. He also mentions a Margery PYRON and a John PYRON in the will who appear to be the parents of Joshua Pyron, although this is not specifically stated. Also, since in the will he is styled as John Cate, Jr., my educated guess is that he is the son of a John Cate, Sr. Either that, or there was another John Cate living nearby who was older than John Cate, Jr. Any ideas on this line would be appreciated.

Several books have been written on various branches of the Cate/Cates family. There also used to be a family newsletter called Kates Kin which was published by Anna Kates Gardner of Rarden, Ohio. This newsletter was an excellent source of information on the Cates family by any spelling. This covered Cate, Cates, Kates and variant spellings. I have access to most of these newsletters, but they are not indexed. I have found other Cate/Cates families living in North Carolina and Tennessee who have similar first names as the Cate family members in my branch. I feel there must be a connection somewhere.

Here are some good Cate/Cates resources:

Cates, Banks R., Jr. Robert Cate--Virginian, Quaker, Shoemaker. Typewritten manuscript, 1989. 10 p.

Dawson, Aurelia Cates. Our East Tennessee Kinsmen.

Gardner, Anna Kates. Formerly published a family newsletter called Kates Kin. Her address is: Anna Kates Gardner, P. O. Box 8, Rarden, OH 45671

An online genealogy forum for posting queries has also been set up specifically for the CATES family. It can be found at the following address:

    http://genforum.familytreemaker.com/cates

***Note***During the Fall of 1998, GenForum combined with Family Tree Maker, which means that all queries and information posted to that site becomes the property of Family Tree Maker. This is still a good site to look up information and get contact names for the CATE/CATES lines you are searching, but be advised that if you now post a new query or a response to something on that site, chances are that sometime in the future Family Tree Maker will include that information on a CD-ROM which they will sell for profit to anyone who is interested. I do not like the idea of someone else using my hard researched information and ideas and selling them for a profit without my knowledge. This same practice is evident on all of the Family Tree Maker pages which are found on the internet, if you will read the disclaimer notices on those pages. I recommend the Family Tree Maker pages as good look up pages, but I don't recommend posting information there. Similar things can be said for Ancestry.com and MyFamily.com which are connected to each other and seek to make a profit from genealogical materials on the internet.
