COLLINS GENEALOGY
Compiled by Glenn Gohr

I've been aware of my Collins and McEver lineage since about 1980 after corresponding with Sandra Johns Lee, Charlotte Collins Bond of Danielsville, Georgia, Truman McEver of Russellville, Arkansas (deceased), Earl Strebeck of Sallisaw, Oklahoma and others. All of these researchers descend from the marriage of Margaret Collins and John McEver. Charlotte Bond's maiden name is also COLLINS, and she lives in Madison County, Georgia, so there is a chance that she has a double kinship to this Collins family that intermarried with the McEvers. Charlotte's father was George Collins, and her grandfather was Charlie Collins, and great-grandfather was Nelson Collins, all of Madison County, Georgia.

Recent information on the Collins line has come to light through the McEver E-Mail List through Rootsweb, but I've not seen copies of the sources for the earlier generations of this family, so this is still unproven as to what Catherine's maiden name was, who was the wife of John Collins.

Here is my COLLINS lineage as far as can be proven:

  1. John COLLINS, b. ?, d. 1790 Mifflin Co., PA; md. Catherine [BRICE ?], d. 1815 Mifflin Co., PA
  2. Margaret COLLINS, b. ca. 1740 PA, d. aft. 1807 Jackson Co., GA; md. ca. 1764 Berks Co., PA to John McEVER, b. Dec. 1739 Lancaster Co., PA, d. ca. 1807 Cherokee Indian Nation
  3. Andrew McEVER, b. ca. 1768 Cumberland Co., PA, d. Oct. 1863 Madison Co., GA; md. ca. 1795 Elbert Co., GA to Prudence DICKASON, b. ca. 1775, d. bef. 1850 Madison Co., GA
  4. Elizabeth "Betty" McEVER, b. ca. 1796 Elbert CO., GA, d. 1857 Madison Co., GA (buried at Jones Chapel Cemetery); md. 4 Mar. 1822 Madison Co., GA to Samuel Franklin BEARD (father born in Ireland; mother born in South Carolina), b. 26 Sept. 1802 South Carolina, d. 4 Aug. 1880 Madison Co., GA (buried at Jones Chapel Cemetery)
  5. Martha Auntny BEARD, b. 23 Oct. 1833 Madison Co., GA, d. 23 March 1913 Gibtown, TX; md. ca. 1865 Madison Co., GA to Russell SARTAIN, b. 24 August 1828 Madison Co., GA, d. 24 April 1909 Gibtown, TX (Both buried at Gibtown Cemetery)
  6. Maizie Elmira Catherine SARTAIN, b. 7 Dec. 1871 Water Valley, Yalobusha Co., MS, d. 15 March 1954 Morton, TX (Buried at Morton Cemetery); md. 12 Dec. 1888 Jack Co., TX to McCager Martin GARVIN, b. 19 Oct. 1856 Newton Co., MS, d. 17 Dec. 1920 Frederick, Tillman Co., OK (Buried at Hackberry Cemetery) (first cousins on the Sartain side)
  7. Orpha Antonia Hazel GARVIN, b. 11 November 1895 Jack Co., TX, d. 21 Dec. 1979 Cortez, CO; md. 12 Dec. 1915 Parker Co., TX to William Earl HARRIS, b. 8 Aug. 1895 McNairy Co., TN, d. 5 Jan. 1967 Cortez, CO (Both buried at Dove Creek Cemetery, Dove Creek, CO) *These are my grandparents.

ROOTSWEB COLLINS MESSAGE BOARDS

There are several Message Boards on Rootsweb which are set up for the COLLINS surname. These boards are for posting information in the following categories: BIBLE, BIOGRAPHY, BIRTH, CEMETERY, CENSUS, DEATH, DEED, IMMIGRATION, LOOKUP, MARRIAGE, MILITARY, OBITUARY, PENSION, QUERIES, and WILLS. The search perameters and drop down screen on the main page allow you to do a key word search or to view all postings according to one of the above categories. Click on the icon below to access the Collins Message Boards.

Query Post a query (or information from any one of the above categories) on any COLLINS name or related family. Please give dates, and locations they lived. Try to give as much information as possible.

An online genealogy forum for posting queries has also been set up specifically for the COLLINS family. It can be found at the following address:

    http://genforum.familytreemaker.com/collins

***Note***During the Fall of 1998, GenForum combined with Family Tree Maker, which means that all queries and information posted to that site becomes the property of Family Tree Maker. This is still a good site to look up information and get contact names for the COLLINS lines you are searching, but be advised that if you now post a new query or a response to something on that site, chances are that sometime in the future Family Tree Maker will include that information on a CD-ROM which they will sell for profit to anyone who is interested. I do not like the idea of someone else using my hard researched information and ideas and selling them for a profit without my knowledge. This same practice is evident on all of the Family Tree Maker pages which are found on the internet, if you will read the disclaimer notices on those pages. I recommend the Family Tree Maker pages as good look up pages, but I don't recommend posting information there. Similar things can be said for Ancestry.com and MyFamily.com which are connected to each other and seek to make a profit from genealogical materials on the internet.
