I first learned about my wife's Combs connection through researching the Johnson family of Madison County, Arkansas. Since then I have also found out there is a very active Combs family group of researchers that have an e-mail list with Rootsweb and a large database of Combs ancestors and descendants. Also several different web sites that trace my Combs line and the connections with the Johnson family. One thing special about this line is that Sarah COMBS was married to Martin JOHNSON, a soldier of the War of 1812. I've not been able to find any other War of 1812 ancestors in my wife's family or my own.
An interesting sidebar I should mention is that in working at the Flower Pentecostal Heritage Center (Assemblies of God Archives) I have come into contact with an import evangelist couple named Joe and Ada Combs. They are traveling evangelists with the Assemblies of God. They were even featured on a German TV documentary because of their cross-country preaching expeditions. In fact, a portion of this documentary is included in the Flower Pentecostal Heritage Center Museum which I help to manage at my job. This couple is in the late 70s, but they still continue to preach wherever God leads them. I've also met one of their sons, Phillip Combs, who is now a missionary in Yigo, Guam. Also, their daughter is Bonita Storey, who is employed in the Human Resources Office at the Assemblies of God Headquarters where I work in Springfield, Missouri. It is a small world. You never know who you may run into who could be distantly related.
Here is my wife's COMBS lineage as far as can be proven:
If you have queries concerning the Combs surname, you may post these at the Combs Family Genealogy List, which is a part of the Rootsweb e-mail discussion lists. It offers free queries and discussion on the Combs surname and some variant spellings.
To subscribe, send an e-mail to: [email protected]
Leave subject line blank (This will be ignored).
In the body of the message type: subscribe
Then a welcome message will be sent telling how to post messages. Once you are subscribed, you may send a query to everyone on the list by sending e-mail to: [email protected]
Post a query (or information from any one of the above categories) on any COMBS name or related family. Please give dates, and locations they lived. Try to give as much information as possible.
An online genealogy forum for posting queries has also been set up specifically for the COMBS family. It can be found at the following address:
***Note***During the Fall of 1998, GenForum combined with Family Tree Maker, which means that all queries and information posted to that site becomes the property of Family Tree Maker. This is still a good site to look up information and get contact names for the COMBS lines you are searching, but be advised that if you now post a new query or a response to something on that site, chances are that sometime in the future Family Tree Maker will include that information on a CD-ROM which they will sell for profit to anyone who is interested. I do not like the idea of someone else using my hard researched information and ideas and selling them for a profit without my knowledge. This same practice is evident on all of the Family Tree Maker pages which are found on the internet, if you will read the disclaimer notices on those pages. I recommend the Family Tree Maker pages as good look up pages, but I don't recommend posting information there. Similar things can be said for Ancestry.com and MyFamily.com which are connected to each other and seek to make a profit from genealogical materials on the internet.
