The best source of information concerning the early Dodsons of Virginia is the following book:

Williams, Mrs. Sherman, compiler and editor. THE DODSON (DOTSON) FAMILY OF NORTH FARNHAM PARISH, RICHMOND COUNTY, VIRGINIA: A HISTORY AND GENEALOGY OF THEIR DESCENDANTS. Rev. Silas Emmett Lucas, Jr., publisher. Easley, SC: Southern Historical Press, 1988. 2 Vols.

(Volume 1 basically covers the family of Charles Dodson, Sr. of Richmond Co., VA and his many descendants. Volume 2 includes the "Dangling Dodsons"--Dodsons for whom the authors didn't have enough information to prove descendancy at that point in time. Later researchers have solved some of the puzzles. Volume 2 also includes some very important legal documentation, Bible records, and census information. In addition, about 100 pages of the second volume includees additional information on various branches of the Dodson family which arrived too late to be included in volume 1. The second volume also includes a very comprehensive index [by name and by locality] for vols. 1 and 2.)

Another book on Dodsons (very low in stock as of December 1998) available from Southern Historical Press is an earlier book done by Rev. Silas Emmett Lucas, which contains some information not found in the 2-volume book. It is:

Order # FH 8. $20.00 plus $3.50 postage and handling.

Another interesting book on Dodsons is: DODSON GENEALOGY: 1600-1907. By Thompson P. Ege. Philadelphia, PA: Deemer & Jaisohn, 1908. 434 p. (This book is interesting reading, but it does not document its information. It includes information on early Dodsons from Virginia and descendants as well as Dodsons from Pennsylvania who may be from different lines.)

Possibly may still be able to order a copy from the author at: Mrs. O. J. Lynn, 140 North Central Avenue, Centerville, TN 37033. Cost was $12.50 plus postage and handling.

And a suggestion from Mary Keating Dotson:

If you own a book and have exhausted its research information, consider
donating it to your local library (specify the gift as lendable--not only
will it put it in the realm of ILL, but you get a nifty tax deduction to
boot).
