Some information has been provided by kit submitters and their own research. Other information has been added from other sources. Additions and corrections are welcome.
Lineage information in pointed brackets < > lists the Group Number and the DNA Kit Number as found on the Harris Y-DNA Results Page. The kit numbers are listed in the same order as presented on the Harris Y-DNA Results Page. If you are looking for a specific kit number, click CONTROL and F at the same time. Then do a key word search by kit number or name of earliest-known ancestor. Additional information will be included as more DNA markers are tested and as more participants match up with this grouping. This is an ongoing project seeking to chart out lines of descent that have been DNA tested as shown on the Harris Y-DNA Results Page. Information is based on DNA results, lineage information supplied by kit submitters, Bible records, vital records, legal documents, census records, family histories, internet sources, etc. In some cases the paper trail and/or information found on the web or other sources may be in error. Please view this information as a tool and not as proven fact.
Over 40 different DNA kits have been submitted that match up with Group 4. Several different lines for Group 4 seem to trace back to Thomas Harris (ca. 1636-ca. 1688) of Isle of Wight Co., Virginia, according to the family records available from those who have submitted DNA samples. Two other lines go back to Britton H. Harris (1803-1859) of Darlington Co., South Carolina. The other kits that have been submitted are not yet matched up with these two groups, but the DNA markers appear to be a close match.
There has been much discussion on the Harris lists on Rootsweb as to whether Group 4 or Group 12 descends from Sergeant John Harris (ca. 1588-ca. 1638) of Charles City Co., Virginia. The DNA of the two groups does not match. It would be helpful to find a DNA submitter in England that traces back to Sir William Harris (1556-1616) of Creeksea, County Essex, England.
The modal listing of Group 4 up to 111 markers is listed on the HARRIS Y-DNA RESULTS Page.
In order to better compare matches in Group 4, the modal listing has also been posted on Ysearch with a user ID of NGPM4. To view the modal listing go to the Ysearch user ID page for NGPM4
This modal listing has also been posted at Ancestry.com on its DNA site. For those in Group 4 who have tested (or posted their results for free) with Ancestry.com, you should find a match with Group4Modal and surname Harris.
For an exact match to this group, the submitter must be a male with the HARRIS surname, be from the same haplogroup, and the DNA markers from his kit number should match exactly with these results. In most cases there will be at least one variation in DNA marker values. If the two test kits are from close relatives, then the variation is due to normal mutations of DNA. DNA mutations may occur every 4 or 5 generations. Some specific markers tested are known to mutate faster than others.
To assist in research and discussion, two special e-mail lists for members of Group 4 have been established on Yahoo! Groups. The Yahoo! Groups are a combination of mailing lists with other features such as photo and database storage, polling, etc.
To view the group home pages on Yahoo for these lists, go to:

HARRIS DNA GROUP 4 LINEAGE CHARTS
Here are lineages supplied by kit submitters as well as other documentation. The most recent representative in each line (living persons are not shown) has been tested, and their DNA markers match closely with the modal for Group 4, giving evidence for a common ancestor.
The lineage numbers assigned match up with the order in which each kit is listed on the HARRIS Y-DNA RESULTS Page. With each new update, the order of kits listed may change.

Lineage #11.—DNA Kit #23695—Ysearch ID #G8RF8. This is for a line that goes back to William Henry Tyner (1844-ca. 1908) of Phillips Co., Arkansas.
Because the DNA matches others from Group 4, there is no doubt that the ancestors of this line trace back to Sarah Tyner, daughter of Nicholas Tyner of Isle of Wight Co., Virginia. She had 3 children by John Harris (ca. 1665-ca. 1712), son of Thomas Harris (ca. 1636-ca. 1688) of Isle of Wight Co., Virginia. This kit belongs to the Tyner DNA Project and is listed on the Tyner Results Page and Tyner Results Page with FTDNA with the same kit number.
The Tyner Surname DNA Project includes at least 3 kits submitted for descendants of Sarah Tyner and John Harris. Also, Y-Search lists other kits with matching DNA and a lineage going back to this couple.
This family’s migration pattern is: Virginia > Isle of Wight Co., VA > Chowan District, NC > Hamilton Co., TN > Lafayette Co., MS > Phillips Co., AR.
> This kit’s Ysearch user ID is G8RF8. Additional information on this DNA kit and the paternal line can be found on the Ysearch user ID page for G8RF8. This is a 37-marker test that belongs to the I-M253 haplogroup/SNP (longhand=I1 haplogroup). It matches the 111-marker modal for Group 4, with one variant at marker 32.
