HARRIS DNA—GROUP 43

Compiled by Glenn Gohr

*This is a partial summary. It may take several weeks for any updates to this page after updates to the Harris Y-DNA Results page at FTDNA and the last update from the HARRIS WELCOME Page. This is a time-consuming project.

Last updated January 1, 2018.

(Contact the webmaster with any further updates.)

This is an ongoing project seeking to chart out lines of descent that have been DNA tested as shown on the Harris Y-DNA Results Page. Information is based on DNA results, lineage information supplied by kit submitters, Bible records, vital records, legal documents, census records, family histories, internet sources, etc. In some cases the paper trail and/or information found on the web or other sources may be in error. Please view this information as a tool and not as proven fact.

NOTICE: Information presented in these webpages is not to be construed as PROVABLE FACTS. It is up to the user to verify all information that he/she receives. Some information has been provided by kit submitters and their own research. Other information has been added from other sources. Additions and corrections are welcome.

Lineage information in brackets lists the Group Number and the DNA Kit Number as found on the Harris Y-DNA Results Page. If you are looking for a specific kit number, click CONTROL and F at the same time. Then do a key word search by kit number or name of earliest-known ancestor. Additional information will be included as more DNA markers are tested and as more participants match up with this grouping.

This group belongs to the R haplogroup. The new haplogroup listings adopted in 2014 conform to the ISOGG SNP nomenclature, which uses the shortened haplogroup name (one letter only) combined with the terminal SNP (Single Nucleotide Polymorphism). In groups where kits are matched together, they will show the same haplogroup letter, but they may show different SNP designations.

See the International Society of Genetic Genealogy (ISOGG) page for the Y-DNA Haplogroup R and its Subclades.

Here are lineage charts (supported by DNA) that fall into Group 43 of the Harris Y-DNA Results. All spouses are not shown—only the ones that are listed as the parent of the generation that follows. For questionable generations, the names are preceded by an asterisk *. This means the connection between the person with an asterisk and the previous generation are unproven.

The modal listing of Group 43 up to 111 markers is listed on the HARRIS Y-DNA RESULTS Page.

In order to better compare matches in Group 43, the modal listing has also been posted on Ysearch with a user ID of QHR5U. To view the modal listing go to the Ysearch user ID page for QHR5U

For an exact match to the modal of this group, the submitter must be a male with the HARRIS surname, be from the same haplogroup, and the DNA markers from his kit number should match exactly with these results. In most cases there will be at least one variation in DNA marker values. If the two test kits are from close relatives, then the variation is due to normal mutations of DNA. DNA mutations usually occur every 3 or 4 generations. Some specific markers tested are known to mutate faster than others.

In the 1790 Census, Harris was the 12th most popular name in the U.S., and a majority of Harris families lived in Pennsylvania. One research project has been started at Family Tree DNA which is called Pioneer Families of Northern Pennsylvania. The Harrises in Group 43 are part of these pioneer families of Northern Pennsylvania.

Here is some background information on the Pioneer Families of Northern Pennsylvania project:

New project 8/30/2013. A project intended to help descendants of pioneer families and early settlers of North Central Pennsylvania find their roots using DNA results and family tree information. The targeted groups include those of British Isles, German, French, Native American Ancestry, and others living within or traveling through Penns Woods during the mid-1600's to late 1700's. This project is intended to help members make tree connections using DNA results and family tree information; so, prospective members must have DNA test results and enough family tree information to trace their ancestry to the targeted groups/area. GEDCOM uploads to FTDNA preferred. Please include enough information in your join request to determine your qualification as a descendant of colonial or pre-colonial Pennsylvania. This is a Dual (Y-DNA & mtDNA) Geographical Project.
