HARRIS DNA—GROUP 6

Compiled by Glenn Gohr

*This is a partial summary. It may take several weeks for any updates to this page after the last update from the HARRIS Y-DNA RESULTS Page. This is a time-consuming project.

Last updated August 1, 2015.

This is an ongoing project seeking to chart out lines of descent that have been DNA tested as shown on the Harris Y-DNA Results Page. Information is based on DNA results, lineage information supplied by kit submitters, Bible records, vital records, legal documents, census records, family histories, internet sources, etc. In some cases the paper trail and/or information found on the web or other sources may be in error. Please view this information as a tool and not as proven fact.

NOTICE: Information presented in these webpages is not to be construed as PROVABLE FACTS. It is up to the user to verify all information that he/she receives. Some information has been provided by kit submitters and their own research. Other information has been added from other sources. Additions and corrections are welcome.

Lineage information in brackets { } lists the Group Number and the DNA Kit Number as found on the Harris Y-DNA Results Page. The kit numbers are listed in the same order as presented on the Harris Y-DNA Results Page. If you are looking for a specific kit number, click CONTROL and F at the same time. Then do a key word search by kit number or name of earliest-known ancestor. Additional information will be included as more DNA markers are tested and as more participants match up with this grouping.

Several of the lines in this group seem to trace back to Robert Harris (ca. 1635-1701) of Ware Creek, New Kent Co., Virginia. Two kits shown that match closest to the Modal (perfect match) are the 67-marker tests for William Harris (ca. 1669-Bef. 1733) and Thomas Frederick Harris (1828-????), both kits going back to Robert Harris (ca. 1635-1701) of Ware Creek, New Kent County, Virginia.

This group belongs to the R haplogroup/SNP (longhand=R1b1a2 haplogroup). Here are lineage charts (supported by DNA) that fall into Group 6 of the Harris Y-DNA Results. All spouses are not shown—only the ones that are listed as the parent of the generation that follows. For questionable generations, the names are preceded by an asterisk *. This means the connection between the person with an asterisk and the previous generation are unproven.

The modal listing of Group 6 up to 67 markers is listed on the HARRIS Y-DNA RESULTS Page.

In order to better compare matches in Group 6, the modal listing has also been posted on Ysearch with a user ID of VDWTS. To view the modal listing go to the Ysearch user ID page for VDWTS

This modal listing has also been posted at Ancestry.com on its DNA site. For those in Group 6 who have tested (or posted their results for free) with Ancestry.com, you should find a match with Group6Modal and surname Harris.

For an exact match to this group, the submitter must be a male with the HARRIS surname, be from the same haplogroup, and the DNA markers from his kit number should match exactly with these results. In most cases there will be at least one variation in DNA marker values. If the two test kits are from close relatives, then the variation is due to normal mutations of DNA. DNA mutations usually occur every 3 or 4 generations. Some specific markers tested are known to mutate faster than others.

To assist in research and discussion, a special e-mail list for members of Group 6 has been established on Yahoo! Groups. The Yahoo! Groups are a combination of mailing lists with other features such as photo and database storage, polling, etc.

HARRIS DNA GROUP 6 LINEAGE CHARTS
Here are lineages supplied by kit submitters as well as other documentation. The most recent representative in each line (living persons are not shown) has been tested, and their DNA markers match closely with the modal for Group 6, giving evidence for a common ancestor.

The lineage numbers assigned match up with the order in which each kit is listed on the HARRIS Y-DNA RESULTS Page. With each new update, the order of kits listed may change.

Lineage #1.—DNA Kit #2126464. This is for an unknown Harris line (the lineage has not been reported).      ca. 1817-aft. 1880, of Wilkes County as Hence Harris. My father also remembered
Henderson was called Hence Harris, as did another family member, Mary Jane Martin.

Lineage #28.—DNA Kit #N32918—NUBFG. This is for the line of Albert Enoch (ca. 1837-1915). Although the surname is not Harris, this kit’s DNA matches closely with others in Group 6. This kit has not yet been charted with Group 6 on harrisdna.org, but the kit is listed, and the DNA does match up.

From census records, this family appears to be mulatto. There is a Bedford Enox listed in the 1870 Census in Anderson Twp., Caswell Co., North Carolina. He is age 39 and black (b. ca. 1831). He is also listed as Bedford Enoch in Anderson Twp. Caswell Co., NC in 1880 as age 48. And in 1900 in Faucette Twp., Alamance Co., NC as Bedford Enoch. Since Albert Enochs/Enix named a son Bedford, it seems likely that this Bedford Enox might be a brother of Albert. The 1880 Census also lists a Benjamin Enoch, age 52 and black in Stony Creek, Caswell Co., NC, with a son named Bedford, age 14. Benjamin could also be a brother of Albert and Bedford.

This family’s migration pattern is: North Carolina > Orange Co., NC > Albemarle Co., VA > Surry Co., NC > Sumner Co., TN > Garrard Co., KY > Marion Co., IN > Norfolk, VA.

This kit’s Ysearch user ID is NUBFG. Additional information on this DNA kit and the paternal line can be found on the Ysearch user ID page for NUBFG

This kit belongs to the R-P312 haplogroup (longhand=R1b1a2a1b haplogroup). This kit is a 37-marker test that matches the 67-marker modal for Group 6 with one variant in marker 15.

Lineage #31.—DNA Kit #189373. This is for the line of Robert M. Harris (1814-1890) of Mississippi.

Of interest is the fact that a second kit has been submitted to the Harris Surname DNA Project that links back to Robert M. Harris (1814-1890). The other kit #181782 is in the unmatched kits. More research needs to be done to see if the ancestors, Robert M. Harris, belongs in Group 6 or an unmatched grouping.

This family’s migration pattern is: Tennessee > Alabama > Mississippi > Lowndes Co., MS > Clay Co., MS > Montgomery Co., MS > Saline Co., AR.

This kit is a 37-marker test that matches the 67-marker modal for Group 6 with one variance in marker 13. This kit belongs to the R-M269 haplogroup/SNP (longhand=R1b1a2 haplogroup). The kit submitter has not supplied a lineage. A few more details from other sources are added below:

1 Robert M. {6-#189373/U-#181782} Harris b: 17 MAR 1814 d: 10 JAN 1890
  + Elizabeth Moore b: 15 OCT 1808 d: 3 MAY 1889

Lineage #33.—DNA Kit #18515—Ysearch ID #PHHCX. This is for the line of William Harris (ca. 1669-bef. 1733) (Generation #2), son of Robert Harris (ca. 1635-1701) of Ware Creek, New Kent Co., Virginia.

This family’s migration pattern is: Virginia > Hanover Co., VA > Albemarle Co., VA > Surry Co., NC > Sumner Co., TN > Garrard Co., KY > Marion Co., IN > Norfolk, VA.

This kit’s Ysearch user ID is PHHCX. Additional information on this DNA kit and the paternal line can be found on the Ysearch user ID page for PHHCX

This kit belongs to the R-M269 haplogroup/SNP (longhand=R1b1a2 haplogroup). This kit is a 25-marker test that matches the 67-marker modal for Group 6 with variances in markers 4 and 10. The lineage supplied by the DNA Kit submitter at http://www.harrisdna.org/info/18515.html can be found here:
