HARRIS FAMILY REUNIONS

Here is background information and a listing of reunions held by the family of James David Harris (1871-1938), my great-grandfather. Also, information on the Harris Reunions in Tennessee and other related Harris reunions will be included at the end of this page.

HOW THE JAMES DAVID HARRIS REUNIONS GOT STARTED

It was Uncle Denniss idea to have the first Harris reunion in June of 1961. Aunt Theola and Uncle Dennis had already been married for 11 years by this time. Dennis had met Theolas brothers and sisters, but he hadnt met many of the rest of the family. He wanted to meet them all. Uncle Dennis asked Aunt Theola to write to each one of the families and tell them to come for a big family get together at Marlow, to be held in Dennis and Theolas yard. Theola did all of the correspondence. They werent sure how many of the family would be able to come. But there was excellent attendance, and almost every one of the cousins made it to that first reunion. They all arrived before bedtime on Friday evening for the reunion the next day.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THE JAMES DAVID HARRIS REUNIONS

If you will notice, the locations for the reunions has rotated throughout the years. Different ones of the 10 Harris children would take turns at hosting the reunions. Some with smaller families or those who lived near each other would pitch in to help when it was one of their turns. The reunions had about a 5-year rotation in the beginning years. Then the Louisiana Cashes (family of John Troy Cash, Sr.) decided they wanted to host the reunion in Louisiana (which everyone enjoyed). That turned into a 6-year rotation. Then others began to offer to host the reunion while some of the original hosting families were unable to carry on with hosting as family members began to age and younger generations began to scatter, etc. Currently there seems to be no regular rotation schedule, and the reunion for the most part is open to allow anyone who wishes to host the reunion to have it.

Bob Evans, husband of Margaret (Williams) Evans, was the president and spokesman for the reunion for many years. After he was unable to fulfill these duties, then his son, Bobby Evans became the president and spokesperson. Aunt Theola Williams was the treasurer of the reunion for many long years. Then she enlisted the assistance of Shirley (Williams) Blundell who served a number of years as treasurer. Currently the treasury is maintained by Sue and Bobby Evans (son of Margaret Williams Evans) and Rhona and Terry Harris (son of Leland Harris).

The reunions have been held in a number of interesting places including Marlow and Duncan, Oklahoma; Dove Creek and Cortez, Colorado; Seymour, Lubbock, and Friona, Texas; Wimberly, New Braunfels, Sweet Home, Lockhart, and Boerne, Texas; Lyford, Raymondville, Harlingen, and Edna, Texas; South Padre Island and Port Isabel, Texas; Doyline and Shreveport, Louisiana; Livingston, Montana; and Springfield, Missouri.

THE HARRIS REUNIONS OF TENNESSEE

The Harris Reunions in Tennessee were started in 1934. This reunion is for any and all descendants of Gideon Harris (1772-1860) of Prince Edward Co., Virginia and Marshall Co., Tennessee. He married Martha Taylor Gilliam. They are both buried in the Gideon Harris Family Cemetery in Marshall County, Tennessee. The cemetery is located on his farm. His log house is still standing (2004). (For more information on the Gideon Harris house and cemetery, see The Harris Miscellany Page.)

Records of the reunions were kept for many years by Joe Cletus and Olive S. Harris who lived at Florence, Alabama. They were the primary promoters of this reunion throughout the years and as long as they lived. Joe C. Harris passed away in June 1979, and Olive passed away in August 1997. Their family records are now in the possession of their daughter, Vonda (Mrs. Bill) Reeves, of Madison, Alabama.

Others who were involved in the early years of the reunions included Cousin W. Lee Harris who compiled a book on the Harris family in 1966 called Captain Thomas Harris, 1586 to 1658: English Immigrant in 1611 . It was privately published and has been a good reference book for Harris researchers for many years. The final printing was done by Joe C. and Olive Harris as he was elderly by the time the book was ready to be published. Cousin Frank Harris and Bobbie Pinkston of near Columbia, Tennessee were also officers of the reunions for many years. Frank was president of the Columbia group, and Bobbie was the secretary. Lewis D. Harris, who lived for many years at Memphis, Tennessee, was the president of the reunions held at Adamsville, Tennessee for many years.

The Tennessee Reunions were not held for three years during World War II, as times were rough. But other than that, they were held every year continually for over 60 years. By the 1960s through the 1990s it came to be the plan for the reunion to be held on the second weekend of August with the reunions being held at a park in Columbia, Tennessee on the even-numbered years (it was only held on Saturdays when the reunions were in Columbia). The reunions were held at Adamsville, Tennessee (on both Saturday and Sunday) on the odd-numbered years. After meeting at the Leapwood Community Center for many years, the reunions by the 1970s and 1980s were held at the Adamsville Senior Citizens Building and later moved to the Adamsville Community Center in the 1990s.

In recent years (since 1997), the reunions have only been held every other year (odd-numbered years) at the Community Center at Adamsville, Tennessee. Many of the organizers in the Columbia area passed away, and no one from that area wanted to take over the responsibility of hosting a reunion there anymore. Since 1997 the bulk of the attendees have been from the families of Gideon Lindsey Harris (Lewis D. Harris was president of the West Tennessee Harris Reunions for many, many years, but he retired from that position. His nephew, Doyle Treece, served as president for a short time, but passed away in 2004. Lewis D. Harris passed away in 2009. Freeda (Weeks) Bricker, daughter of Mary (Harris) Weeks has served as the president of the Tennessee Harris Reunion since 2005. Vice President since 2005 is Glenn Gohr. Inez Treece (sister of Lewis D. Harris) was secretary for many years, followed by her daughter, Jelva (Treece) Brooks. The current secretary is Janice (Walker) Word of Adamsville, Tennessee, who was elected an officer at the reunion in 2003. Some of the helpers at the Adamsville Reunion in recent years have included the officers named above, along with Clyde Treece, Sam Word, Brenda Pickens, Myrna Treece, Adell Treece, and several others.

Olive Harris was the mainstay of the Tennessee Reunions for many years. She was able to attend one of the reunions of the James David Harris family, held at Sweet Home, Texas, in 1984. Here is a note from Olive (Mrs. Joe C. Harris) that was received in the spring of 1990:

So many wonderful remembrances crowd my mind, since Joe Cletus and I began genealogy in 1938 helping Cousin W. Lee Harris, at the insistence of his Uncle Tin [David Tinsley Harris] and Uncle John Harris [John Lindsey Harris]John being Joe Cletuss dad too, who died in December 1934.

Already our reunions had begun in 1935 in Marshall County, Tennessee, after a preliminary one in 1934 to lay the foundation.

1938 was just after Vonda [Vonda Harris Reeves], our third daughter was born, and before many of you were born, including our two sons. As the saying goes: Much water has flowed under the bridge, or, over the dam, since they were built for flood control and electricity!*

World War II gas rationing stopped the reunions from 1943-45. In 1946 they started again at Shelby Park, Nashville, Tennessee. In 1947, 1948, and 1949 they were held at Shiloh National Military Park in West Tennessee. In 1950 the reunion was held at Shelby Park, Nashville, Tennessee, when polio was raging in Alabama. In 1951 and 1952 the reunions were at Bryant Station in Marshall County, Tennessee. Then they went back and forth between Bryant Station and Shiloh Park through 1956.

Because of crowding at Shiloh Park, we met at Leapwood, Tennessee in 1957 for several years. Folks came from far and near to the two meeting places in Marshall and McNairy Counties in Tennessee with SMILES, HUGS, and GREETINGS. Then, in June 1984, it was my honorable privilege to be the one from afar off at the Sweet Home Texas Reunion, with our daughter and family, Vonda and Bill Reeves, who visited friends from Alabama who lived nearby.

What a JOY to meet so many new fine folks, that had not been to Adamsville, Tennessee, and to greet the ole timers, who had come to Adamsville! Love to one and all!Olive Harris (Mrs. Joe C. Harris).

*Note: Olives husband, Joe Cletus Harris, retired from working with the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) which handled flood control in Tennessee and Alabama. The Tennessee River flows through Florence, Alabama, where Joe C. and Olive made their home. In 1983, it was my privilege to stay in Olives home. She took me to see the locks of the river canal where the level of water was changed by letting water in and out to raise and lower the boats as they traveled down the Tennessee River. This was quite a thrill to see!
